Topic Birthdays

Born 15th February 1943 Died 4th September 1998
Lal Waterson
Little introduction is needed here for Waterson group member Lal Waterson, alongside her sister Norma and brother Mike Waterson and cousin John Harrison they produced some great music for Topic Records as well as other labels through a long-career in the music business. Albums like The Watersons ‘Frost and Fire’ and ‘For Pence and Spicy Ale’ truly highlight the talent of one of the leading folk revival groups of the 60’s and 70’s.

29th February 1908 Died 29th September 1982
A L Lloyd.
Regarded as one of the most influential figures in the 1950’s – 1960’s folk song revival, A L Lloyd also known as Bert Lloyd had a remarkable and eventful career – whaler, sheep farm hand, social historian and journalist. The mastermind behind two classic Topic album recordings, ’The Iron Muse’, industrial folk songs and ‘The Bird In The Bush’, a collection of traditional erotic songs which featured early recordings by Anne Briggs. He was appointed artistic director at Topic Records in 1958 and along side Ewan MacColl was one of the biggest influences on what was released by Topic Records.

 LUKE JACKSON

 accompanied by

 ANDY SHARPS

with support from

RHIANNON SCUTT

Saturday 24th

September, 2016

When Luke Jackson last appeared at Town Hall Live it is fair to say that he stunned the audience and left them open mouthed with the sheer power his performance.
Soon after he formed a trio with best friends Andy Sharps (bass) and Conor Downs (drums).  In July last year they released a seven track CD called 'This Family Tree'.  All seven songs are shrewd observations of growing up as teenagers.
Luke, from Canterbury, is still only 22 years old and is surely destined for great things.  He is a phenomenal performer, he is not just another bloke with a guitar.  He has been compared to Martin Simpson and Richard Thompson.

Luke writes powerful, impressive and personal songs. and a stage presence that many artists would die for.  The command and control he has over his voice is breathtaking and leaves you thinking that you have witnessed a flawless performance.  On top of that his lyrics are hard hitting and downright amusing.  Luke will be accompanied by Andy at this concert.
The evening will be made complete with support from Rhiannon Scutt, who was one half of the popular local duo, Rita Payne.

Advance tickets are priced at £12.00.  Tickets are on sale now and can be obtained from the One Stop store in the town, from Brian on 01652 649230 or from www.wegottickets.com
They will be £14.00 on the door

GILMORE &

 ROBERTS

It is three years since Katriona Gilmore and Jamie Roberts last played Town Hall Live.  They have released two studio albums since and have just released a live album.  The tour celebrates the release.
Katriona and Jamie met 10 years ago whilst studying at Leeds College of Music.  They started playing open mic nights and quickly progressed to the concert circuit forging a solid full time career for themselves.
Live they are dynamic with Kat playing fiddle and mandolin and taking lead vocals, whilst Jamie plays guitar on his lap, giving him his own unique style.  He also takes lead vocals on many songs.
To mark 10 years together they recorded the live album on their Spring tour and promote it with a 20 date UK tour.  We are sure to see a dynamic performance from the pair.
Support comes from Harrogate musician Vicky Whelan, who played a stunning support slot supporting Danny Schmidt last year.  She was so good, we just had to invite her back.

Advanced Tickets for the concert are priced at £12.00 and can be obtained from the usual outlets.  They are on sale now.
                  Tickets are on sale now.
