Playing For Change Foundation - Empowering Girls Through Music.

Throughout history, women have been told that they have no power, no right to anopinion - no voice. Thankfully, we've seen firsthand that music education is a powerful tool for inspiring girls to fight for a better future. That’s why, this year, we want to place the spotlight on our programs that are transforming their communities to support female empowerment. In Nepal, for instance, lives are being saved thanks to the Mother’s Society, which educates local women and girls about their rights, and the dangers of human trafficking. At Ecole de Musique de Kirina in Mali, female students are finally being allowed to learn to play their country’s traditional instruments, a privilege that was only given to male students until recently. At Joudour Sahara in Morocco (a country in which women were not even allowed to divorce their husbands until 2004) , we’ve achieved a 90% increase in female student attendance since the program began last year. These are just a few examples of the important societal change that Playing For Change Foundation programs are initiating. We have so much more to do, but we cannot do it without your help. Playing For Change Foundation Bringing change to the township of Gugulethu, South Africa This year marks a decade of the Playing For Change Foundation; join us in celebrating 10 years of positive change through music as we highlight one of our music programs each month starting with the first school in South Africa. South Africa was where we first broke ground with the Playing For Change Foundation music program in 2007. Since then, the Playing For Change Foundation has expanded programmatic efforts in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Each week 100+ students from 10 area primary schools attend weekly music classes at the Imvula Music Program in Gugulethu. These classes include lessons in guitar, vocals, drums, saxophone and keyboard/piano, as well as dance and marimba, and are led by six talented teachers.
