Rock Music Falls To A 50 Year Low

MTV reports that 2010 wasn’t a good year for rock fans, as just three of the year’s top 100 singles were classified as rock.
It’s the poorest showing for rock music in 50 years in the UK. In 2009, 13 of the 100 biggest sellers were classified as rock; in 2008, it was 27.
And 2010’s top rock seller, Journey’s Don’t Stop Believin’, was only there thanks to a pop remake. The track was originally released in 1981 and re-entered the charts after it was covered on Glee.
Not surprisingly, it’s hip-hop and R&B that are taking the market share, accounting for 47 of the year’s top 100 tracks. Forty hits were classified as pop, the remaining 10 were dance music.
Rock fared better on the album chart, with Mumford & Sons’ Sigh No More album the year’s 10th best seller. Overall, rock albums made up 27 of the top 100.

Blues Legends Contribute to 100 Years of Robert Johnson Album

B.B. King, Charlie Musselwhite, Honeyboy Edwards, Ruthie Foster, Cedric Burnside and Hubert Sumlin are part of a Robert Johnson tribute album set for release on February 1 in the USA by Ryko/Big Records.

Big Head Todd and the Monsters are behind the album, 100 Years of Robert Johnson, and tour and have named themselves the Big Head Blues Club – Todd Park Mohr (guitar, vocals), Rob Squires (bass), Brian Nevins (drums) and Jeremy Lawton (keyboards).

According to under cover fm producer Chris Goldsmith said the band worked hard to give Johnson’s music the respect it’s due. Mohr said: “In so many of the takes on Robert’s stuff, you don’t get the depth of emotion that’s in the lyrics and in Robert’s voice. That’s one thing that Chris and the band and my voice were able to bring to it. Chris had great ideas about how to represent the stuff, and all the musicians were just so good at what they did, the unique arrangements just came naturally."

Robbie Robertson Set To Release New Album

The Guardian and Rolling Stone report that Robbie Robertson is to release his first album in 13 years. Although the LP includes three songs co-written by Eric Clapton, Robertson has clearly moved on from the Big Pink – How to Become Clairvoyant features appearences by Rage Against The Machine’s Tom Morello and Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor.
"The boys helped me out," Robertson told Rolling Stone. "I think I've written some really good songs, and ... it turned out quite extraordinary." Robertson, 67, released four solo albums between 1987 and 1998, long after the break-up of the Band. Now, almost 50 years after the group's first ramblings with Bob Dylan, Robertson has written This Is Where I Get Off, a song about his last days as the Band's guitarist and principal songwriter. Other tracks explore addiction, 60s idealism and "rock'n'roll's early reputation as the devil's music".
Clapton performs on six tracks, and there are cameos from Steve Winwood, pedal steel guitarist Robert Randolph, and Morello. Reznor appears on just one song, providing "additional textures", Robertson explained, to an instrumental called Madame X. "It's a really cinematic piece of music. I wanted Trent to contribute something, and he understood exactly
How to Become Clairvoyant is due out in April.

Anniversary of Hank Williams Death

It wasn't until the early morning of New Year's Day, 1953, that anyone realized that country music great Hank Williams was dead. Williams' driver Charles Carr was taking Hank Sr. from Knoxville, Tennessee, to Canton, Ohio, for a New Year's Day concert. Carr knew that the singer hadn't moved for hours in the back seat of the car but did not realize that the country icon was dead.

Williams, after all, was sickly and had long-term drinking and drug abuse problems. It wasn't unusual for him to be found passed out. But when Carr finally checked on Williams in Oak Hill, West Virginia, the singer was cold, blue and stiff. He was dead, at the age of just 29.

Official documents, naturally enough, state that Williams died on January 1, 1953, but the exact time of his death (and where he actually passed away) has been shrouded in mystery for years.
