Strummerville Calling

Thank-you, thank-you and thank-you to all the people who are busy organising benefits for us this month... your efforts on our behalf are truly appreciated
And thanks to everyone who has been supporting us by shopping at the on-line shop ... the Joe Strummer Christmas cards have been flying off the shelves
Been lots of action going on here at Strummerville... we are now in a new office down at the yard... and so happy to be out of the caravan – big thanks to Jason Mayall for making this possible, also huge thanks to Alan Pell and Stage Three Music who gave us all their furniture (especially the Tiki bar!!)
We also had our first Strummerville national tour in October thanks to the bands who played every night and everyone who came out to support them. You can see some of the tour footage on our Strummerville Sessions, which went out on Channel 4 last month [
We're delighted to be supporting The Lovebuzz project in Holloway which is a community based recording studio for under-privileged young people in N19 and looking forward to opening the music room at Tilinanu orphanage in Milawi in early 2011.
In terms of new music we have over-hauled our DIY platform. We have integrated with Soundcloud to help fans of our DIY bands to share their tracks online. Also we have a new Top 20 Download Chart, which will show the most downloaded tracks from the previous week, the chart re-sets each Monday.
We now have over of 200 bands who are involved and we are happy to announce that we have supported over 65 bands with recording and promoting records this year.
As always thanks for all the love.
Nice piece in the guardian yesterday
Love,
Trish

Days of Dope & Hope - Willie Busted (Again)

Country legend and a bluecrow favourite, Willie Nelson was arrested on Friday morning during a stop by Border Patrol agents in Sierra Blanca, Texas allegedly in possession of 6 ounces of marijuana. Nelson had been traveling from California to Austin when his bus was stopped about 9 A.M. Border Agents found the marijuana on the bus and Nelson took responsibility for it.

Willie was taken to Hudspeth County Jail where he was booked on a misdemeanor and released on $2,500 bail. It is not known when he is due back in court.

Nelson has a long history with the law for marijuana and other drugs. In 2006, 1-1/2 pounds of grass was found on his tour bus along with hallucinogenic mushrooms. Back in January of this year, six members of his band and crew were arrested in North Carolina for moonshine and pot possession.
Just like the good old days eh?

Albert "Little Smokey" Smothers Dies

Veteran Chicago blues guitarist and vocalist Albert "Little Smokey" Smothers died last Saturday. He was 71.

Originally from Tchula, Mississippi, Smothers moved to Chicago as a teenager. Following the lead of his older brother, the late Otis "Big Smokey" Smothers, he learned guitar and was soon performing with such artists as Howlin' Wolf and Little Walter.
Smothers was known as a mentor to aspiring musicians, particularly guitarist Elvin Bishop and the late Paul Butterfield. Both men were students at the University of Chicago when they met Smothers and fell under his influence.
Smothers was featured as a sideman or band leader on at least six albums, beginning with George "Mojo" Buford's "Chicago Blues Summit" in 1981. His last released album, 2009's "Chicago Blues Buddies," was a compilation of his musical collaborations with Elvin Bishop.
Smothers was also a featured artist in Martin Scorsese's 1993 TV series, "The Blues.“

Song Writers Donate Lyrics For Auction In Aid Of The Teenage Cancer Trust

PRS for Music, the organisation that collects and pays royalties to its 70,000 song-writing and composing members, launched an ambitious project to raise vital funds to help young people across the UK fight cancer.

Called 'The Art of the Song', the project asked for some of the UK's best songwriters and composers to donate hand written lyrics from their greatest hits to be auctioned off at
Bonhams in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust.

Sir Paul McCartney, Paul Weller, Jim Kerr, Sir Tim Rice, Julian Lennon and Annie Lennox are just some of the famous songwriters that have penned original lyrics from their most famous hits exclusively for the campaign. As well as raising money for Teenage Cancer Trust the project hopes to create a lasting legacy of the music and song lyrics of our generation.

Those keen to purchase the pieces will have the chance to bid on lyrics including Sting's - Message in a Bottle, Duran Duran's - Girls on Film and Sir Tim Rice's ' 'Don't Cry for me Argentina'. Chris Rea has donated his original lyrics written for 'Road to Hell' famously penned on the M25.

Teenage Cancer Trust funds specialist teenage cancer units in NHS hospitals that are designed to give teenagers the very best chance of a positive outcome. There are currently 17 of these units across the country, including three in Yorkshire. The charity plans to build a further 16 so that all young people needing hospital treatment for cancer across the UK have access to the dedicated, specialist support they provide. See http://www.teenagecancertrust.org/

Teenage Cancer Trust has a strong music heritage. The charity's annual concerts have become one of the most eagerly anticipated events in the British music calendar. Now into their tenth year, the concerts were the brainchild of Teenage Cancer Trust Patron and The Who front man Roger
Daltrey CBE. Each year, the shows have featured some of the world's biggest bands and artists.

The auction will take place at
Bonhams Knightsbridge on December 15th 2010 with items available to view from the PRS for Music site www.m-magazine.co.uk now!
