Jimi Hendrix Monterey 1967 Guitar from Fender

“This is for everybody”

Jimi Hendrix took the world by storm with his incredible Monterey Pop Festival performance, which he concluded with the sacrificial burning of his now-iconic hand-painted Stratocaster. Destroyed during the fiery culmination of his set, this one-of-a-kind guitar survived only in photos and film. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of this milestone in music history, we created the limited-edition Jimi Hendrix Monterey Stratocaster

FEATURES

HENDRIX-INSPIRED ARTWORK

The guitar's body art is an homage to Hendrix's hand-painted original, giving fans, players and collectors the chance to own a modern classic

MONTEREY POP FESTIVAL 1967

It’s amazing that a guitar that
was played only once would go on to be one of the most recognized in history, but that’s exactly the case with a one-of-a-kind Stratocaster that Jimi Hendrix sacrificed at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival.
Hendrix hand-painted a flowery design on this legendary Strat—in nail polish, no less—the night before he was to close out the inaugural event and brought it out for his final song, “Wild Thing”.

After Hendrix sang the last words and displayed his full arsenal of guitar wizardry—playing behind his back, with his teeth—he had one trick left. Hendrix
turned to his amps and scraped the guitar
against the speaker cabinets for maximum feedback.

The Fiery Finale
“This is for everyone,” he said just before spraying something on the guitar. Jimi bent down to kiss the instrument and then tossed a lit match to elicit flames from the prone Strat. Like a disciple worshiping at an altar, Hendrix knelt before the blazing guitar as the audience stared agape watching him smash it to pieces.
While only a shard of that now-famous piece of history exists today, Fender has painstakingly recreated Jimi’s Monterey Strat to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the fiery milestone, right down to the nail-polish artwork that burned its way into the memories of fans around the world.

FENDER® Custom Shop Releases 30th Anniversary Documentary Film

In celebration of Fender Custom Shop’s 30th anniversary milestone, Fender Musical Instruments Corporation (FMIC) releases an exclusive, 10-minute documentary about the genesis of the renowned Fender Custom Shop – known as the “Dream Factory.” Told through the eyes of eight trailblazing luthiers who helped elevate the Custom Shop to worldwide acclaim, the Fender Custom Shop Founders Design 30th Anniversary Documentary intercuts archival footage and photos alongside present day interviews with the influential Founding Master Builders who brought the historic shop to life: Michael Stevens, John Page, George Blanda, Fred Stuart, J.W. Black, Mark Kendrick, Alan Hamel and Gene Baker.

The documentary reflects the lifelong passion each Founding Master Builder holds for Fender and creating guitars. The filmmakers utilized an unfiltered approach to capture each builder in their purest and most-honest state. The story of Fender Custom Shop now breathes through the experiences of some of its Founding Master Builders whose one-of-a-kind handcrafted creations remain as legendary today as the icons who wielded them throughout history including: Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan and many more.

“The Fender Custom Shop Founders Design 30th Anniversary Documentary allows fans to experience the Fender Custom Shop story in a way it has never been told – raw and straight from the source,” said Mike Lewis, Vice President Product Development, Fender Custom Shop. “We’re proud to share the story of Fender Custom Shop as a way to immortalize each builder’s talent, creativity, and contribution to the overall Fender brand legacy.”

Over the course of one month, the crew filmed footage across three states, visiting John Page and
J.W. Black at their home workshops in the Oregon forest and Michael Stevens at his shop in the picturesque Texas countryside. The remainder of the Founding Master Builders came together at the present day Fender Custom Shop at Fender’s Corona, Calif. factory where they reminisced and shared stories from the early days. Henry Diltz, a legendary rock photographer and partner at the Morrison Hotel Gallery, joined the film crew to capture portraits of each Founding Master Builder and their Founders Design anniversary guitars through his lens. What resulted from the filming process was an unearthing of countless memories, archival photos and video of these Founding Master Builders, preserving a piece of Fender’s most-valuable history. Chronicling the milestones and what Fender Custom Shop has come to stand for through the years, the documentary will take fans on a journey – starting with the early days in Michael Stevens’ garage – and key successes that took the Shop to the next level, and closing with continuing the legend and bringing the band of Founding Master Builders back together.

The Fender Custom Shop Founders Design 30th Anniversary Documentary is released in tandem with Fender Custom Shop’s Founders Design Project: eight guitars, each designed by one of eight visionary Founding Master Builders featured in the documentary. One of the most exclusive and coveted collections in the Shop’s history, only 30 units of each design will be built by a team of artisans at Fender Custom Shop in Corona, Calif. and released throughout 2017 beginning in March at select dealers.

GRETSCH® HONORS AC/DC’s MALCOLM YOUNG WITH NEW CUSTOM SHOP “SALUTE” JET™

GRETSCH® HONORS AC/DC’s MALCOLM YOUNG WITH NEW CUSTOM SHOP “SALUTE” JET™

“When the smoke clears, the Holy Trinity of the Greatest Rhythm Guitarists in the World will always include Malcolm Young!”
– Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine

SCOTTSDALE, ARIZ. (January 19, 2017) – Gretsch has the extraordinary privilege of honoring

Malcolm Young is, without question, one of the greatest guitarists in rock n' roll history.

For over 40 years his riffs have inspired generations of rock and metal guitarists.
legendary rock icon Malcolm Young with the release of the Gretsch G6131MY-CS Custom Shop Malcolm Young "Salute" Jet™.

“Malcolm Young is the best rhythm guitar player in the world of rock…period. His contribution to those who have followed in his footsteps is immeasurable.”  - Jerry Cantrell, Alice in Chains

“I never knew what a real rhythm guitar player was until I heard Malcolm Young. There never was or will be one like him again in the world. I've been trying to play guitar with precision like him for years and still haven't even come close. I want to thank Malcolm for giving me something to strive for.” - Larks Frederiksen, Rancid

Powering an endless row of full stacks, Young’s tone is like a hell-bent freight train— driving, deafening and totally unstoppable.

"To me, Malcolm is a one of a kind and the heart and soul of AC/DC. The combination of the riffs he wrote and his rhythm playing are the foundation of who they are.” – Eddie Van Halen

The Gretsch team painstakingly examined and documented the guitar that drove Malcom’s tone — his famed No. 1 guitar: a battle-worn ’63 Jet Firebird™, handed down to him by Harry Vanda and elder brother George Young (of Easybeats fame) and nicknamed “The Beast.” Malcolm certainly made the instrument his own, not least by removing two of the three
pickups, stripping away the red finish, and pounding out some of the hardest rocking rhythm guitar ever heard in either hemisphere.

The G6131MY-CS Custom Shop Malcolm Young “Salute” Jet is a meticulously crafted Gretsch Custom Shop recreation accurate down to every last nick, scratch and dent acquired over Young’s long

True to form, the instrument has a double-cutaway chambered mahogany body with a maple top, white binding and heavy relic natural lacquer finish. The mahogany set neck has a solid-feeling “U” profile, with white binding and heavy relic lacquer finish, topped by a 12”-radius ebony fingerboard with a bone nut, 23 medium jumbo frets (including zero fret), and pearloid Neo-Classic™ “thumbnail” inlays. A single TV Jones® TV Classic pickup at the bridge delivers that unmistakable sound, wired up with three “G-arrow” control knobs (pickup volume, master volume and master tone). Other premium features include a Space-Control™ bridge with ebony base, ’60s-style Jet tailpiece, nickel/gold hardware, Schaller® tuners and a vintage-style hardshell case.

Available Summer 2017 at select Gretsch retailers.
