Don't Miss Thank Folk For Fridays at the Ivy Pub in Sleaford Lincolnshire On Friday 1 March, 2024.
Don't forget 'Thank Folkers' on Friday March 1. Dave, Hillbilly & Jock McLelland to open at 7pm as normal and this months guests will get you singing along. Keith Luckey from Peterborough, Nigel Creasey & Teri the busiest duo in Lincolnshire and Cabin Fever are a fantastic collective of musicians from the Lincolnshire wolds. All making the journey to Sleaford Town.
Topic is delighted to announce this eponymous collaboration between Jim Ghedi & Toby Hay - their first since 2018's 'The Hawksworth Grove Sessions.’ Postponed for two years due to the small matter of a global pandemic, finally, as some semblance of normality took shape, in February 2022, the duo headed into Giant Wafer Studios, mid-Wales, with very little rehearsal time and recorded the entire album live, with no edits or overdubs over three days.
Jim and Toby are both prolific, praised and established artists in their own right. Hailing from South Yorkshire, Ghedi's previous work has often been instrumental, exploring the natural world and his relationship to it, as seen on 2018's A Hymn For Ancient Land but also developing into using his voice, songwriting and traditional material on his more recent album, In The Furrows Of Common Place. Toby Hay, hailing from the Cambrian mountains, professes likewise, that the landscape serves as eternal muse and the spiritual groundwork of his entrancing guitar playing which has dazzled critics and listeners alike throughout his career. All of this makes their collaboration with the world's oldest independent label and custodians of UK folk music, Topic Records, a natural home for this exceptional record.
The album artwork includes beautiful liner notes by Andrew Male.

CERA IMPALA - A Slice of Folk, Jazz
and Hillbilly Noir, Touring Dates in 2023
Cera Impala creates songs that feel
instantly familiar. Her whiskey-honeyed voice takes intimately crafted pieces
to another time and place, one of dreams and magic as sensual as they are
savage. Her music has been heard all over the world, Impala has toured internationally
with her handpicked band, The
New Prohibition. In 2019, Cera debuted a new duet project, Delightful Squalor
currently in the studio set to finish an EP this year. She has previously
been a member of The

Green Tree, The
Dance Bandits and the fabulous queens of sass and harmony, The Bevvy Sisters. She

Fueled by pure and poetic storytelling,
Impala has paved a path less travelled in steadfast pursuit of dreams. With
here latest album aptly titled "Wildest Dreams" she invites her
audience to journey through it all with effortless poignancy. The music
sparks images of vaudeville saloons, circus acts and music box ballerinas.
Her world is one of playfulness, exploration and natural raw emotion.
Eetheral themes are embedded in authentic American roots and serious
musicianship. A multi-instrumentalist, she is no stranger to banjo, guitar,
piano and uke, adding a shimmer of synth to bridge genres in a sumptuous
union of sounds. While fully at home with each instrument, each one is
temporal lover enjoyed fully in each moment it is heard. The result is
perfectly moorish, Wildest
Dreams is an instant classic.
Cera's previous album 'Tumbleweed', a
collection of songs that will simultaneously take you all the way around the
world and back into the heart of the woods. THE NEW PROHIBITION: A slice of
hillbilly noir and a measure of gritty 20's and 30's jazz, the New Prohibition

americana. "Dr." Dirk Ronneburg, her long-time musical partner, is
a fiddle-blazer of the highest degree who also performs with gypsy jazzers
Viper Swing, and in did a stint in the folk supergroup, Southern Tenant Folk
Union. The synergy between them is palpable; their music is otherworldly.

Songs are central to Salt
House. New songs that sound as if they’ve always been here.
Ancient ballads
woken up. Poems given the tunes they’ve long deserved. Songs about place,
politics, landscape and birds. A collaboration of writing and song from 3 of
Scotland's foremost performers; Jenny Sturgeon, Ewan MacPherson and Lauren MacColl.
Their latest album 'Huam'
sees them solidify their reputation as fine interpreters of words both old and
new. It's their third collection of songs, and the second pairing with folk
heavyweight producer Andy Bell. It was released amidst the impressive roster of
Hudson Records in 2020.
Their most recent EP 'Working For Zeus' was released in 2021, featuring 5
amazing guest musicians Maija Kauhanen, Dean Honer, Cahalen Morrison, Petter
Frost Fadnes and Olav Luksengård Mjelva.
The trio continue their
love of recording ‘on location’ with this album, taking themselves to rural
Argyllshire to finish writing and recording the songs which were crafted
between their homes of Inverness-shire and Shetland.
'Undersong' (2018) was
recorded in the stunningly restored Telford Church on the island of
Berneray
(as seen on Channel 4’s Restoration Man.) You can hear its tranquility in the
sympathetic and dynamic recording. A sense of place captured both in songs and
sound; Ewan claims if you listen closely you can even hear the flies in the
overhead lights.
You’ll also hear echoes of
Pentangle, a touch of Dick Gaughan, murmurs of Scandinavian and Scots, all woven
into a music that’s traditional and new. The group’s meticulous attention to
detail, shared passions and care for their craft sees Salt House soar.
More
about the band:
Singer, guitarist and
harmonium player Jenny has a PHD in seabirds. Described by R2 Magazine as “a
singer-songwriter who brings together the old and new with a rare skill.” Her
songs are earthy and wise; she sings them with beauty and power.
Ewan brings to Salt House
a wealth of understanding and experience gained with the highly respected Fribo
and Shooglenifty. His songs are poetic and layered; his voice plaintive and
from the heart.
Lauren’s arrangements hold
a rich, deep, darkness flecked with gold. You can hear the Highlands in
Lauren’s elegant bowing, honed while performing with the quartet RANT, The
Rachel Newton Band and as a prolific and award-winning soloist. She plays with
warmth, wisdom and soul.

This eponymous 1971
debut album by Anne Briggs, largely unavailable for 48 years, is widelyregarded as a pillar of any folk collection. Re-issued here as part of
the Topic Treasures series –
the label’s classic and notable albums expanded in deluxe format – with rare
images, new liner notes(by esteemed journalist and Briggs authority, Ken Hunt).
This debut album contains some of
Briggs’ most notable songs, including ‘Blackwater Slide,’ which she famously
taught to Bert Jansch, (who recorded it on his ‘Jack Orion’ album) and ‘Go Your
Way,’ co-written with Jansch. As with the 1971 original, the sleeve here
contains song notes by the highly-regarded English folk singer and collector of
folk songs, A.L. Lloyd.
Anne Briggs began
singing in local folk clubs in her teens. In 1962, she became part of the
Centre 42 – a leftist group of artists, writers, actors and musicians whose aim
was to make arts and culture accessible to the masses. Ewan MacColl first heard
Briggs’ remarkable voice and persuaded her to join the group and tour. There
Briggs met MacColl’s comrade, A.L. ‘Bert’ Lloyd who became her mentor,
producing her debut EP, ‘The Hazards Of Love,’ and recording Briggs for Topic
landmark albums, ‘The Iron Muse’ and ‘The Bird In The Bush.’
Briggs went on to
record a follow-up album, ‘The Time Has Come,’ for CBS which, at the time, sold
poorly and was rapidly deleted. Two years later, she recorded again but blocked
the subsequent album’s release, disheartened as she was by her singing. She
retired from the limelight, seemingly for good, although Topic’s 2019 re-issue
of this debut heralded a huge resurgence of media and fan interest in this most
reclusive of folk doyennes.
