Kings of Leon Say That Their Songs Start on Bar Napkins

Twenty years ago, long before Kings of Leon became festival headliners, Caleb Followill made
a deal with one of his friends.

"He and I used to go to random bars, all over the world," says the singer. "Wherever we were, if we had a day off, we'd put our finger on a map and go, 'Alright, we're going to go to this little dive bar'. "And we would sit there and get some bar napkins. I would write poetry and he would draw pictures. And we would trade 'em off to each other and say, 'Alright, whichever one of us is going to be famous first, you own my lyrics - and likewise I own your art'."

Needless to say, his friend got the better end of the bargain. A signed copy of Caleb's lyrics for Use Somebody recently sold for $6,600 (£4,800) at auction - so those wine-stained poems could be a lucrative little nest egg.

Caleb also held on to some of the napkins, too, and every so often he finds one lying around
his house in Nashville.

"I mean, I open books and I have bar napkins from all over the world," he says.

"Some of the poems are not as great, and that will let you know how boozy that night was. But every now and then, there's a clear little picture that I'm painting - and you don't remember exactly when you wrote it, or how you wrote it, but it can definitely make you proud."

Skinner & T'witch's New Single , 'Living in the Dream' - Due For Release on 19 March 2021

Skinner & T'witch's forthcoming indie-folk single, 'Living in the Dream' (a pre-release from their forthcoming album, 'The Songcatcher') is due for release on March 19th!

Skinner & T'witch are delighted by the superb cover for the single (even if they do say so themselves!), just back from the design studio of the wonderfully creative Sarah Patrick: www.sarahpatrickdesign.co.uk

'Living in the Dream' captures surreal and subconscious perceptions of post industrial city living, inspired by traffic jams, monolothic buildings, busy streets, and urban routines.

The song features the marvellous Joshua Burnell on keys, Hugh Bradley on electric bass, John Rodgers on lead guitar, and John Arneson on drums.

'The Songcatcher' album is due for release later this year.

Derby Folk Festival Returns to the Stage for 2021

Derby Folk Festival is delighted to return to the live stage in 2021 in the heart of the city centre.

Last year’s event was hosted at home as live concerts could not go ahead due to the pandemic. Instead, online performances especially recorded for the festival by Derby LIVE’s technical team, drew audiences from around the world, along with an extensive Festival Fringe on Facebook. Many of the artists who had planned to be in Derby last year are preparing to return in the autumn, optimistic that live shows can once more draw Folk enthusiasts back into the city.

Now in its 15th year this will be the chance to get together again and it's going to be extra special this time.

A number of artists who were due to perform in 2020, but were unable to be part of the ‘At Home’ event, will be returning for 2021, along with past favourites and familiar faces who will once again be able to play with a full band.

Highlights include:

  • Home Service
  • O’Hooley & Tidow
  • Kitty Macfarlane
  • India Electric Co.
  • Ninebarrow

John Hiatt &The Jerry Douglas Band’s Forthcoming Album, Leftover Feelings

John Hiatt with The Jerry Douglas Band: 'All the Lilacs in Ohio'

“All the Lilacs in Ohio” is the first video released from John Hiatt with The Jerry Douglas Band’s forthcoming album, Leftover Feelings, available May 21, 2021.

This project and video were recorded in Historic RCA Studio B, continuing the studio’s legacy as a “temple of sound,” and creating documentary resources for use by the non-profit Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum.

These educational materials showcase recording methods reminiscent of those practiced in the 1950s and 60s, with Hiatt, Douglas and band members making and recording music in real time by listening to each other and emotionally reacting through their spontaneous performances.
