100 Club Saved By Converse?

Mojo Magazine reports that a place for live music since 1942, last September's announcement that West End rock'n'roll omphalos the 100 Club was closing was grave indeed. And in December, it seemed the game really was up when a public campaign to buy it fell short of the £500,000 required. Even pleas by Macca, Mick Jagger and Beady Eye fell on deaf ears.
But the Converse shoe company - which, it should be remembered, has made special edition plimsolls featuring The Ramones, AC/DC, The Clash and Nirvana - has stepped up to keep it open, meaning that stretching ahead once more is a full programme of rock, jazz, punk and more (Sick On The Bus and Drongos For Europe play a double-header there on March 24!).
"Converse and the 100 Club both share a love for music and this partnership is a great opportunity to reunite the 100 Club with a generation who experienced history inside its walls," said Converse in a statement, "as well as introduce it to a new generation with a vow to bring the best in music to its legendary stage."
Owner Jeff Horton has assured London radio station XFM that the shoe company's corporate presence will be discreet. But MOJO wonders, will the new partnership keep the Working Men's Club décor - unchanged since 1973.
We will just have to wait and see what happens!

Big Plans For Robert Johnson's 100th Birthday

Legacy Recordings plan to celebrate Robert Johnson's 100th birthday in a big way. Here is the news: May 8, 2011, marks the 100th birthday of Mississippi Delta blues-man Robert Johnson, who, according to legend, sold his soul down at the crossroads of Highway 61 and Highway 49 in a midnight bargain that has haunted the music world for three-quarters of a century.

The 'deal' brought forth Johnson's incandescent guitar technique and a run of 10-inch 78 rpm singles for the Vocalion, Oriole, Conqueror and Perfect labels recorded in San Antonio in 1936 and Dallas in 1937.
Those songs have become a cornerstone of Columbia Records' identity, and will be celebrated on two Centennial releases from Columbia/Legacy, a division of Sony Music Entertainment.

Bob Dylan: In Concert: Brandeis University 1963

A previously unknown live recording of a 21-year-old Bob Dylan taped at the Brandeis First Annual Folk Festival in Waltham, Massachusetts on May 10, 1963, Bob Dylan In Concert – Brandeis University 1963 captures a performance in front of an appreciative audience two weeks prior to the release of The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan (May 27, 1963).
Drawn from two sets that spring night at the Brandeis Folk Festival, tracks on Bob Dylan In Concert – Brandeis University 1963 include “Honey, Just Allow Me On More Chance” (incomplete), “Talkin’ John Birch Paranoid Blues,” “Ballad Of Hollis Brown,” “Masters of War,” “Talkin’ World War III Blues,” “Bob Dylan’s Dream,” and “Talkin’ Bear Mountain Picnic Massacre Blues.”
Previously available as a limited time offer, Bob Dylan In Concert – Brandeis University 1963 is being reissued in response to overwhelming popular demand for a wide release. The new Columbia/Legacy edition features liner notes penned exclusively for this release by noted Bob Dylan scholar Michael Gray.
