Some Great Rock Music Books Coming in 2022 from Spenwood Books! Check them out
now…

All Down The Line – A People’s History of the Rolling Stones 1972 North American Tour

Hear the diesel drumming… all down the line! The 1972 visit to North America by the Rolling Stones was the first concert tour by the bad boys of rock since the ill-fated Alamont show in 1969. The tour has gone down in history as one of rock’s most celebrated, and this book brings together the eyewitness accounts of more than 250 fans as we travel across Canada and the United States with Mick, Keith and the boys, playing 48 shows across 23 states in just 54 days. Compiled by Richard Houghton

Thin Lizzy – A People’s History

It’s been 35 sad years since Phil Lynott passed away. This book takes you back to the glory days of the 1970s and 1980s, with the Thin Lizzy story told in the words of over 300 fan memories of Phil, Scott, Brian, Robbo, Gary, John – and Midge! It won’t be long ’til summer comes…. Compiled by Richard Houghton

Neil Young – A People’s History

Neil Young has been rocking like a hurricane since the 1960s. This book brings together the memories of over 400 fans of the Godfather of Grunge, whether performing with CSN&Y, on his own, with the Stray Gators, the Blue Notes or the mighty Crazy Horse. From early solo success to feedback laced guitar frenzy, this is the story of Canada’s greatest export to the world! Compiled by Richard Houghton.

Slade – A People’s History

For anyone who grew up in Britain in the 1970s, the sound of Slade is as much a part of their youth as wanting a Raleigh Chopper and a pair of platform boots. Slade – A People’s History is the story of the first band since The Beatles to have three successive singles go straight into the charts at number 1. Get down and get with it as over 300 Slade fans share their memories. Written by music journalist Malcolm Wyatt, author of This Day in Music’s Guide to The Clash, and Richard Houghton.

Goin’ Down De Mont

Leicester’s De Montfort Hall has been the venue of choice for live music acts going back to before the days of The Beatles. This collection of music memories of one of the Midlands’ most loved concert halls has been compiled by Bruce Lee Pegg, author of the acclaimed 2002 biography, Brown Eyed Handsome Man: The Life and Hard Times of Chuck Berry.

Robert Plant's "Music To Soothe Your Soul" Playlist Available Online

Robert Plant's "Music To Soothe Your Soul" playlist is now available online as part of BBC Radio6 Music's Festive Takeover.

Robert rifles through his almost alphabetically filed record collection to soothe your seasonal soul. Expect a few festive nuggets alongside some Delta Blues. Tune in here.

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss recently released their first new album in fourteen years, Raise The Roof, via Rounder Records.

Like its platinum-selling 2007 predecessor, Raising Sand - which won six Grammys, including Album and Record of the Year - Raise The Roof delivers new takes on songs from legends and unsung heroes of folk, blues, country and soul music.

Recorded at Nashville’s Sound Emporium Studios, sessions for Raise The Roof began in late 2019 and wrapped just weeks before the world went into lockdown. “One of my favorite parts of this is the songs and songwriters that I had never heard of,” says Alison Krauss. “Working with Robert, and with T Bone, is always a great education in music history.”

Raise The Roof includes deep cuts by Merle Haggard, Allen Toussaint, The Everly Brothers, Anne Briggs, Geeshie Wiley, Bert Jansch, Calexico and more. “It’s such a far cry from everything I’ve done before,” says Robert Plant. “I love the whole kaleidoscope of music that I’ve explored, but this is a place where you can think within the song, you can decide how to bring home an emotion. It’s another blend that we’ve got, and long may we have more of them.”

Order Raise The Roof here.

Check Out Rudi The Red-Nosed Reindeer by The Steam Shovel. It's Amazing!

Rudi The Red-Nosed Reindeer by The Steam Shovel. Fifty years in the Making and it’s still late for Christmas

The story of Rudi The Red-Nosed Reindeer began 53 years ago, in Birmingham with the first ska recording to hit in the UK. The band were The Locomotive, a well-established touring band who started off playing Kansas City style rhythm & blues in the early 60s but underwent a dramatic change of style when they stumbled across Rock Steady in a local record store that specialised in Jamaican imports.

Picking up on the then-current Rudi theme, where a series of Jamaican bands recorded songs about this mythical gangster figure, gun-shootin’ and retributin’, Locomotive recorded “Rudi’s In Love” wherein Rudi became a nice guy, fell in love and got married. It worked and the 45rpm Parlophone made #25 on the UK singles chart. Thinking to continue in the same Rock Steady/Ska vein, manager Jim Simpson produced a follow-up entitled “Rudi The Red-Nosed Reindeer”, only to have it turned down by EMI Parlophone who, in their wisdom, released the heavier, doom-laden “Mr
Armageddon”.

So there he was, a finished recording of “Rudi The Red-Nosed Reindeer” and the B-side a ska version of “White Christmas” in hand, Christmas fast-approaching, what was he to do? He took what appeared to him to be the logical step and set up his own record label, Big Bear Records, which now is probably the longest-established independent record label in the country.

Distribution was though Island Records, who allocated a Trojan catalogue number (TR 635) and it was released just in time for Christmas 1968. It sold enough to pretty much recoup the recording costs, but there was to be a sting in that reindeer’s tail. Big Bear Records needed a logo, went to design agency Mustard Creasey, who for the princely sum of £25 produced a pink Big Bear logo that Simpson opined resembled Balou The Bear. Not to worry, said those design chaps, it’s a different colour and its hairs are different, so no problem. Walt Disney, however, felt otherwise and quickly despatched his legal chaps to have a stiff word with Simpson who swiftly agreed to do as they asked, to cease and desist.

The single was later to see the light of day on two occasions, re-released in November 1994 and December 1979 on Big Bear Records, with a new Disney-proof logo, with catalogue number BB25 and credited to The Gangsters, and here we go, all those years later, with a digital release and hope that, in these troubled times, folk out there are ready for some silliness and fun.

An Evening With Wilson & Wakeman @ Kirton Town Hall, Thursday 23 December 2021

An Evening With Wilson & Wakeman @ Kirton Town Hall, Thursday 23 December 2021

What better way to celebrate Christmas than with a concert from Damian Wilson and Adam Wakeman back to Kirton for their fourth appearance at Town Hall Live.  Their three previous concerts in 2018 – 2020 have been the highlight of the year for us.  Their concert is the last date of their delayed 2021 European tour UK Tour.

With Damian Wilson on vocals and acoustic guitar and Adam Wakeman on keyboards, vocals and acoustic guitar, it will be an evening of great musicianship, great songs, great atmosphere and jovial banter between themselves and the audience, with stories and memories from their touring careers.

Damian Wilson is most widely known for his contribution to the progressive rock genre, as lead singer in bands such as Threshold, Headspace and Rick Wakeman’s English Rock Ensemble.  As a solo artist he has released five solo albums and a retrospective compilation.  He has featured in over 70 albums in his career and played the lead role of Jean Valjean in Les Miserables.  Damian has one of the most versatile voices in rock, with an incredible vocal range.

Adam Wakeman is best known as the keyboard player with Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne.  He has played with them for over 15 years.  He has released nine albums with his father Rick, as well as releasing four solo albums.  He co-wrote the 2010 platinum solo album ‘Scream’ with Ozzy and has also toured with the likes of Travis, Annie Lennox and 10cc.

As a duo, Damian and Adam have released three albums, ‘Weir Keeper’s Tale’ in 2016 and ‘The Sun will Dance in its Twilight Hour’ in 2018 and ‘Stripped’ in 2019.  The latter is a ‘live’ studio album featuring songs from their 2018 tour and are the staples of their concerts.   It has just Damian and Adam playing acoustic guitar and keyboard and includes many of their own songs and choice covers such as Life on Mars and Feel Like Going Home.

Both are due to release new solo albums in November.  Damian’s is called ‘Limehouse to Lechlade’, which refers to the navigable length of the River Thames heading upstream from Central London to the Cotswolds.  Damian loved his many years living on river boats and travelling the Thames is special for him.  The album has an underlying concept throughout and also represents our journey through life.  Adam’s album is called ‘A Handful of Memories’ and his first contemporary piano in 25 years.  It is a reflection of Adam’s experiences over the years including family trips, his touring family and places that hold special memories for him.

Mike Nesmith of the Monkees Dies Aged 78

Mike Nesmith of the Monkees Dies Aged 78

Michael Nesmith, who achieved global fame as a member of the pop group the Monkees, has died aged 78.

“With infinite love we announce that Michael Nesmith has passed away this morning in his home, surrounded by family, peacefully and of natural causes,” his family said in a statement. “We ask that you respect our privacy at this time and we thank you for the love and light that all of you have shown him and us.”

Nesmith was the group’s guitarist, and also one of its songwriters, for tracks including The Girl I Knew Somewhere, Listen to the Band and Mary, Mary.

With Nesmith alongside Mickey Dolenz, Davy Jones and Peter Tork, the Monkees had huge hits including US chart-toppers Daydream Believer and I’m a Believer, having been formed for a TV sitcom about a rock’n’roll band.

Nesmith successfully auditioned for the role of “Mike” in the show, in October 1965, having begun his music career as a jobbing folk music performer in Los Angeles.
