Topic Birthdays

Born 15th February 1943 Died 4th September 1998
Lal Waterson
Little introduction is needed here for Waterson group member Lal Waterson, alongside her sister Norma and brother Mike Waterson and cousin John Harrison they produced some great music for Topic Records as well as other labels through a long-career in the music business. Albums like The Watersons ‘Frost and Fire’ and ‘For Pence and Spicy Ale’ truly highlight the talent of one of the leading folk revival groups of the 60’s and 70’s.

29th February 1908 Died 29th September 1982
A L Lloyd.
Regarded as one of the most influential figures in the 1950’s – 1960’s folk song revival, A L Lloyd also known as Bert Lloyd had a remarkable and eventful career – whaler, sheep farm hand, social historian and journalist. The mastermind behind two classic Topic album recordings, ’The Iron Muse’, industrial folk songs and ‘The Bird In The Bush’, a collection of traditional erotic songs which featured early recordings by Anne Briggs. He was appointed artistic director at Topic Records in 1958 and along side Ewan MacColl was one of the biggest influences on what was released by Topic Records.

Nic Jones (Born 9th January 1947)
In 1980 Topic Records released the album ‘Penguin Eggs’ by Nic Jones, widely regarded as one of the best Folk albums of its time and some say Nic Jones finest work. This, however, is only one of a few solo albums Nic Jones recorded prior to a serious car accident that would mean English Folk music would be robbed of one of the finest singer/songwriters this country had seem. Still a timeless classic, Penguin Eggs features such classic tracks as ‘Canddee-i-o’ which was also released as a vinyl 7 inch single and classic cuts like ‘The Humpback Whale’ and ‘Farewell To The Gold’.

These essential Nic Jones recordings are all available on Topic.
Nic Jones - Penguin Eggs (Topic CD, TSCD411)
Nic Jones - Game Set Match (Topic CD, TSCD566)
Nic Jones - The Enigma Of Nic Jones (DVD TSDVD590)

Mike Waterson (17th January 1941 - 22nd June 2011)
Quite simply one of the leading figureheads of the folk revival of the 1960’s. A member of the highly regarded and influential Watersons vocal group with his sisters Lal and Norma Waterson and John Harrison. Mike Waterson would go on to record with both the Watersons group and as a solo artist, releasing an eponymous classic solo LP on Topic, 'Mike Waterson' which featured the track 'Tamlyn'.

Mike also went onto write and record the classic Bright Phoebus album with Elaine (Lal) Waterson.

Check out the Watersons/Waterson Carthy An Introduction to release coming in March for great tracks featuring Mike Waterson.
Frankie Armstrong (12th January)
Frankie Armstrong first recorded for Topic in 1965 after being invited by Bert Lloyd who as director of Topic Records was putting together an album of erotic songs with Anne Briggs, called 'The Bird in the Bush' (12T135, 1966). She went on to record two further two albums for Topic 'Lovely on the Water', (Topic 12TS 216, 1972) and 'Songs and Ballads', (Topic 12TS 273 1975)

The latest news from Fledg'ling Records.

"Essential Autumn listening!"
Our newly-released Anne Briggs - Four Songs EP has received very positive responses throughout the press. Last month Folk Radio UK published a lengthy new interview with Anne that focused on her early years as a travelling musician and the time around Four Songs. Earlier this week BBC Radio4 broadcast a wonderful half-hour interview with Anne - The Voices of Annie Briggs. A further feature is due to be published in the next issue of fROOTS.

Four Songs, as the title suggests, collects together four previously unreleased recordings - three BBC recordings from the radio series ‘Folk-Song Cellar’, plus one song privately recorded by one of Anne’s oldest friends - on a beautifully presented vinyl 7" EP.

These rare, simple, unadorned and intimate performances, aching with poignancy, make their first appearance on record, fifty years after recording and capture Anne Briggs singing at just the right time in her brief singing career.

Anne herself has been very excited about the project: “…the results couldn't have been better. Nice the way it came about too, with lost recordings and old friends caring for them for decades.”
Track list: 1 The Recruited Collier, 2 My Bonny Boy (A Bower In My Breast), 3 Polly Vaughan, 4 The Verdant Braes Of Skreen.
