CHRIS DIFFORD (Squeeze) - 'Up the Junction' Tour April - August dates available

Chris Difford Up the Junction poster
Chris Difford
Chris brings his ‘Up the Junction’ tour providing mores stories from the kitchen sink. A stand up and sit-down night of tales and songs from his past in Squeeze.
Chris Difford is a rare breed. As a member of one of London’s best-loved bands, the Squeeze co-founder has made a lasting contribution to music with hits such as ‘Cool For Cats’, ‘Up The Junction’, ‘Labelled With Love’, ‘Hourglass’ and ‘Tempted’. Despite the fact that Chris has helped soundtrack so many fans’ lives since his first release in 1977, the passion for innovation and love of playing still drives him to carry on writing rather than sit back and admire his handiwork. For over 40 years he has been writing with Glenn Tilbrook, very much the Odd Couple.
Over the course of a 13 album career with Squeeze, it was clear from the very beginning that Chris Difford has few peers when it comes to smart, pithy lyricism. His ‘kitchen sink-drama’ style has drawn plaudits from fans on both sides of the Atlantic, while his influence is keenly felt today. The likes of Lily Allen and Mark Ronson, Kasabian, Razorlight and The Feeling have all recognised the debt they owe to Squeeze’s music and to Difford’s way with words, while journalists were moved by his winning combination with Glenn Tilbrook to dub the pair ‘The New Lennon and McCartney’.
Chris first learned to stand on his own when he wrote the lyrics for the fictional band Strange Fruit in the 1998 British comedy film ‘Still Crazy’, for which he won his first Ivor Novello award. Since then he has written and contributed lyrics for the likes of Elton John, Wet Wet Wet, Jools Holland, Paul Carrack, Lisa Stansfield and Bryan Ferry.
Chris has curated ‘Songs In The Key Of London’ event at the Barbican, bringing together musicians old and new such as Glenn Tilbrook, Suggs, Jools Holland, Blaine Harrison (Mystery Jets) and James Hunter, as well as students from the local community. A second event took place in Greenwich Park in 2011 with Gary Kemp, Chris Wood, UB40 and others. In 2014 ‘Songs In The Key Of London’ took place in Regents park with Gregory Porter, The Strypes, Guy Barker Ed Harcourt and Sophie Ellis Baxter.
Chris hosts songwriter workshops and has done so for over 25 years. In 2014 he formed a partnership with ‘The Buddy Holly Foundation’ to run a week of writing at Pennard House Glastonbury. Other writing events include Guardian Master Classes held in London and smaller events at The Rathfinney Wine Estate in East Sussex.

"Beautiful, classy playing and great songs" - Acoustic Magazine
“Americana at its finest!” - fRoots
Combining the mercurial talents of English songwriting legend Boo Hewerdine and acclaimed American Blues guitarist and songwriter Brooks Williams, State of the Union create a magical, stripped back and enthralling musical atmosphere, their performances consistently brilliant, equal parts emotive and entertaining.
The original songs Hewerdine & Williams play are infused by a multitude of influences, from Willie Nelson to Johnny Cash, from the wide open Fenlands to the frenetic buzz of the city. Their recordings are made quickly, in most instances first take, live in the studio, but the sound this amazing acoustic duo capture is rich and expertly executed.

About Boo Hewerdine & Brooks Williams

Boo is perhaps best known from his years fronting much loved English rock band The Bible but he has since enjoyed a solo career spanning over two decades and written thousands of published songs including those for Eddi Reader, Sia, Chris Difford, Kris Drever and KD Lang. His most recent album “Swimming In Mercury” is due out in February 2017 on Reveal Records.
Brooks Williams got his start in the clubs and bars in Boston USA (the same music scene that years earlier sparked the careers of Bonnie Raitt and Chris Smither) and from there he has toured in ever-widening circles for nearly three decades. In 2013 Williams was nominated best male vocalist by the UK’s foremost roots-music mavens, Spiral Earth. AmericanaUK says, “he has a beautiful voice that you just melt into.” He’s also ranked in the Top 100 Acoustic Guitarists. Over the years he has picked alongside Taj Mahal, John Hammond, Paul Jones, Little Feat, Maria Muldaur, Shawn Colvin and Leo Kottke, to name but a few.

More about State of the Union, In conversation:

How did you meet and when did you start playing music together?

Brooks: “Boo invited me to step in last minute to play at his annual Christmas concert. I played a solo set and then sat in with Boo for a few songs. Even though we had never played together before it had a real magic feel to it. I think both of us knew there was something unique happening and worth exploring”.
Boo: “Brooks came and played at one of my Christmas shows when there was so much snow my other guests couldn’t make it! It was magic and we decided to do more. We had actually met once before when Brooks interviewed me for a guitar magazine. Which is a bit like Muhammad Ali interviewing Eddie The Eagle….He is a guitar master!”.

What are the main differences in your guitar styles / playing and approach to songwriting?

Brooks: “On paper our two worlds are pretty far apart, but somehow we’re able to bring them together. It’s an overused phrase but I believe there is some real musical magic in State Of The Union. I like to think it gives us both the opportunity to showcase our ‘expected’ strengths, but also to explore and dig in to the other aspects of our music. In a way SOTU is an alter-ego”.
Boo: “Brooks is a bluesman (of great subtlety) from Georgia and I was in an 80’s indie band….and yet it worked right away. I think the route of why it works musically is both of us have a love of good time… a sense of rhythm. And we both love the craft of writing”.

What do you enjoy most about the duo’s live performances?

Brooks: “It’s the whole package - getting to create a pretty big sound with just two guitars and two voices. Audiences from our earlier tours know what I mean. It’s fun. It’s big. And I’m not aware of anyone else doing it exactly like SOTU”.
Boo: “It feels so much more than the sum of the parts…whenever we revisit SOTU it kicks into gear with ease, in a spooky way!”.

What does State of The Union mean / why did you pick this band name ?

Brooks: “Boo came up with the name. It represents us pretty well, I think. Two distinctly different musicians from different parts of the world with two different sets of influences coming together and making music. And even though on paper it shouldn’t work, there’s so much shared inspiration that it takes on a pretty cool life of its own”.

"They're all such amazing players. It's a rare thing these days, but they do it with finesse and style and it's never showboaty, just pure class" - Chris Helme (Seahorses)
Westival Mark Harris 2
2017 marked the first anniversary of the band, as well as the release of their first 7-track EP, Love is the Weight. The trio has been busy sharing this first offering with their burgeoning audiences across the UK and are looking forwards to releasing their first full length album in 2018. Not only are they capable of writing and arranging top drawer songs, they have the additional instrumental chops to go with it. This trio will soon be causing a stir. Wonderful musicianship and superbly well-arranged material; Stillhouse completely captivate their audience from the first note they play.
"Rich with the tone and feel of dark Americana, but the vocal style, lyrical content and wry humour set it apart. The production and performance is polished; a confident release from a talented band of musicians." - FATEA

MEGAN HENWOOD & FINDLAY NAPIER - UK touring dates MARCH 2019

HenwoodNapier2
Findlay Napier & Megan Henwood
Snape Maltings, Aldeburgh 2016 and Megan Henwood and Findlay Napier are a few hours into an EFDSS run songwriting retreat. They are outside drinking their 7th coffee of the morning. Napier's driven nine hours from Glasgow and is a bit wobbly. Henwood's back from a month long writing trip to Nashville and she is jet lagged and delusional. "Fancy writing a song about maths?" Napier enquires. And so the seed for this songwriting partnership was sewn.
Their collaboration has led to the creation of songs about hermit known as The North Pond Phantom, WBAI host Bob Fass' lifesaving broadcast on 6th Nov 1971, Georg Cantor's struggle with infinity, maths and God and something about Shephards and leaders. They are yet to write a song about pickup trucks... or beer.

Megan Henwood
If ever an artist called on the elements in her songwriting, it's Megan Henwood. The distinguished English singer-songwriter is far too self-deprecating to describe herself as a force of nature, but her third album 'River' reaffirms her unique ability to create roots music of beguiling purity from what's around her.
One of the finest songwriters and storytellers of the contemporary Scottish folk scene Findlay Napier is an insurgent talent that comes on like a Caledonian Loudon Wainwright. Distilled to artful acoustic guitar and Napier's remarkable voice his most recent album 'Glasgow' captures the timeless essence of one of the world's great cities.
