Brooks Williams
Hans Theessink, is one of the fiercest acoustic players in Europe and one of the top acoustic blues stars worldwide, a man who has played with the best and is one of the best, American or European, black & white, old and young, since The 1960s.This guy is the real deal, just a bluesmaster who is as good as it gets on every level. He is literally an international blues treasure.
"One Helluva Guitar Player" - Bo Diddley
"Hans Theessink is an international blues treasure. He is one of the world's pre-eminent pickers and his warm baritone expresses blues" - Blues Revue, USA
"A killerpicker with a magical voice" - Midwest Record, USA
"Hardly anyone gets everything so relaxed and focused on the point ... "
- Bluesnews
"Six-string finesse, vocal brilliance and the deepest southern feeling can not be expressed in any measure" - Global-mojo
"Mr.Theessink sings the blues with a voice the texture of black molasses and plays guitar as if he were born to it. The overall feel of the music is devastating" - The Living Tradition, UK

Brooks Williams hails from Statesboro, Georgia, the town made famous by country-blues legend Blind Willie McTell. Ranked in the Top 100 Acoustic Guitarists, he’s a mean finger-picker and a stunning slide guitarist. Plus, “he has a beautiful voice,” says AmericanaUK, “that you just melt into.” Not one easy to pigeon-hole, Brooks' music is the love-child of country-blues and Americana. fRoots says, "Soulful Americana, full-on blues and tasty rootsy grooves. He really rocks!”
He got his start in the clubs and bars in Boston USA (the same music scene that years earlier sparked the careers of Bonnie Raitt and Chris Smither) and from there he has toured in ever-widening circles for nearly three decades. In 2013 Williams was nominated best male vocalist by the UK’s foremost roots-music mavens, Spiral Earth. AmericanaUK says, “he has a beautiful voice that you just melt into.” He’s also ranked in the Top 100 Acoustic Guitarists. Over the years he has picked alongside Taj Mahal, John Hammond, Paul Jones, Little Feat, Maria Muldaur, Shawn Colvin and Leo Kottke, to name but a few.
His massive repertoire reads like a roots music Hall Of Fame. Classic blues ranging from Bessie Smith to Memphis Slim, to compelling covers from the likes of Dave Alvin, Buddy Miller and Mose Allison. “On top of all this,” writes American Roots UK, “is his songwriting which stands comparison with virtually any of his peers.” Rooted in tradition his songs are timeless. Utterly contemporary they are wryly observed and relevant.
With twenty-two albums to his name, including “Brooks’ Blues” (2017), “My Turn Now” (2016) and “Shreveport Sessions” (2014), and a vigorous touring schedule, Williams is one of acoustic roots music’s guiding lights. From festival stages to listening rooms, from Newport to Philly, Boston to Glasgow, Cambridge to Belfast, London to Detroit, Brooks Williams is, says the San Antonio Light, “a fret monster who has to be seen to be believed!”
"At the top of his game, setting new standards and a fresh direction for the blues." - Blues In Britain
"Soulful Americana, full-on blues, and tasty rootsy grooves."- fRoots

STATE OF THE UNION will return with their third album for Reveal Records in Autumn 2017 and a concert tour with selected Summer Festival dates.
Combining the mercurial talents of English songwriting legend Boo Hewerdine and acclaimed American Blues guitarist and songwriter Brooks Williams, State of the Union create a magical, stripped back and enthralling musical atmosphere, their performances consistently brilliant, equal parts emotive and entertaining.
The original songs Hewerdine and Williams play are infused by a multitude of influences, from Willie Nelson to Johnny Cash, from the wide open Fenlands to the frenetic buzz of the city. Their recordings are made quickly, in most instances first take, live in the studio, but the sound this amazing acoustic duo capture is rich and expertly executed.

About Boo Hewerdine & Brooks Williams

Boo is perhaps best known from his years fronting much loved English rock band The Bible but he has since enjoyed a solo career spanning over two decades and written thousands of published songs including those for Eddi Reader, Sia, Chris Difford, Kris Drever and KD Lang. His most recent album “Swimming In Mercury” is due out in February 2017 on Reveal Records.

More about State of the Union, In conversation:

How did you meet and when did you start playing music together?

Brooks: “Boo invited me to step in last minute to play at his annual Christmas concert. I played a solo set and then sat in with Boo for a few songs. Even though we had never played together before it had a real magic feel to it. I think both of us knew there was something unique happening and worth exploring”.
Boo: “Brooks came and played at one of my Christmas shows when there was so much snow my other guests couldn’t make it! It was magic and we decided to do more. We had actually met once before when Brooks interviewed me for a guitar magazine. Which is a bit like Muhammad Ali interviewing Eddie The Eagle….He is a guitar master!”.

What are the main differences in your guitar styles / playing and approach to songwriting?

Brooks: “On paper our two worlds are pretty far apart, but somehow we’re able to bring them together. It’s an overused phrase but I believe there is some real musical magic in State Of The Union. I like to think it gives us both the opportunity to showcase our ‘expected’ strengths, but also to explore and dig in to the other aspects of our music. In a way SOTU is an alter-ego”.
Boo: “Brooks is a bluesman (of great subtlety) from Georgia and I was in an 80’s indie band….and yet it worked right away. I think the route of why it works musically is both of us have a love of good time… a sense of rhythm. And we both love the craft of writing”.

What do you enjoy most about the duo’s live performances?

Brooks: “It’s the whole package - getting to create a pretty big sound with just two guitars and two voices. Audiences from our earlier tours know what I mean. It’s fun. It’s big. And I’m not aware of anyone else doing it exactly like SOTU”.
Boo: “It feels so much more than the sum of the parts…whenever we revisit SOTU it kicks into gear with ease, in a spooky way!”.

What does State of The Union mean / why did you pick this band name ?

Brooks: “Boo came up with the name. It represents us pretty well, I think. Two distinctly different musicians from different parts of the world with two different sets of influences coming together and making music. And even though on paper it shouldn’t work, there’s so much shared inspiration that it takes on a pretty cool life of its own”.

Brooks Williams & Lightning Express bring together Statesboro Georgia born roots guitarist Brooks Williams with bassist Andy Seward and drummer Keith Angel (aka Lightning Express).
“Pan-Americana Roots 'n Blues, doused in Moonshine alt-Billy and delicious Dixie” - Net Rhythms
The resulting sound is Transatlantic in the truest sense of the word, where Angel’s kickin’ world grooves and Seward’s northern soul-like bass-lines meet Williams’ blues-soaked Americana. It’s an upbeat, danceable mix of rootsy funkiness and intelligent twang.
The three met when recording Williams’ 2013 break-through album, 'New Everything', and were so excited about the resulting sound that they decided to take it on the road. Their first official gig was at none other than the legendary Cropredy Festival in 2013, playing on the big stage to 20,000 people.

Williams says, “I’ve toured mostly solo for nearly 28 years, and am so pleased to have the opportunity to collaborate with Andy [Seward] and Keith [Angel]. They not only understand American roots music, but bring a wealth of experience in English folk and savvy Brit rock that takes my music to new places. Believe it or not, Lightning Express is my first band!".
Williams, ranked in the Top 100 Acoustic Guitarists, is one of the most versatile and entertaining performers on the roots music scene today. From Statesboro Georgia USA, he is a proverbial triple threat: a fiery guitarist, a smooth-as-silk vocalist, and stunning songwriter. Martin Simpson says, “I’ve known Brooks for many years. He’s a lovely player, a lovely singer, and a great writer and a lovely man. The real thing."
Andy Seward has played bass for just about everyone imaginable and has produced some of the biggest artist in the UK folk scene. His credits read like a virtual who’s who and include Kate Rusby, Martin Simpson, Kris Drever, Jon Tams, Heidi Talbot, Eddi Reader, John McCusker, The Finks, and the BBC Radio Ballads. Keith Angel is a drummer/percussionist extraordinaire and owner of Wavelength Studio in Doncaster. His list of credits includes The Finks, Martin Simpson, Fay Heild, John McCusker, Kate Rusby, Jon Tams.
