Lincoln Folk, Roots & World Music Festival Two Sat 10 June 2017

Lincoln Folk, Roots & World Music Festival 2 on Saturday 10th June 2017

Before we know it summer will be upon us, and by popular demand, so will this festival......
Showcasing the quality of live music in the UK; with Martin & Eliza Carthyheadlining and five other very special acts in the line-up, this will undoubtedly be another great festival and an occasion not to miss!

For more than 40 years Martin Carthy has been one of folk music's greatest innovators, one of its best loved, most enthusiastic and, at times, most quietly controversial of figures. His skill, stage presence and natural charm have won him many admirers, not only from within the folk scene, but also far beyond it. Trailblazing musical partnerships with, amongst others, Steeleye Span, Dave Swarbrick and his award-winning wife (Norma Waterson) and daughter Eliza Carthy have resulted in more than 40 albums, but Martin has only recorded 10 solo albums, of which the much anticipated Waiting for Angels (Topic TSCD527) was the latest. In the folk clubs (which he continues to champion), on the concert stage or making TV appearances (he was the subject of the acclaimed `Originals' music documentary strand on BBC 2) - there are few roles that Martin Carthy hasn't played.

Martin is a ballad singer, a ground-breaking acoustic and electric-guitarist and an authoritative interpreter of newly composed material. He always prefers to follow an insatiable musical curiosity rather than cash in on his unrivalled position. Perhaps, most significant of all, are his settings of traditional songs with guitar, which have influenced a generation of artists, including Bob Dylan and Paul Simon, on both sides of the Atlantic.

Eliza Carthy is undoubtedly one of the most impressive and engaging performers of her generation. Twice nominated for the Mercury Prize and winner of innumerable other accolades over a 20 year career, Eliza has performed and recorded with a diverse array of artists including, Paul Weller, Rufus and Martha Wainwright, Patrick Wolf and Bob Neuwirth. More than most, Eliza Carthy has revitalised folk music and captured the most hardened of dissenters with intelligent, charismatic and boundary-crossing performance.

Eliza grew up immersed in the world of traditional music. She still divides her time between touring and recording with her legendary parents, Martin Carthy and Norma Waterson as well as engaging in numerous pioneering solo and band projects, including work with Pere Ubu and Melanie Challenger, an artist in residence in Antarctica. In what has become something of a parallel career, Eliza has co-presented the BBC Radio 3 World Music Awards, been a regular guest-presenter on the BBC Radio 2 Mark Radcliffe Show and has made many appearances on BBC TVs 'Later with Jools'. In her own right, Eliza has been the subject of an hour long ITV documentary ('Heaven & Earth') and 'My Music' on Channel 5. Comedian and writer Stewart Lee describes Eliza as 'Not the Messiah, but a very naughty girl'.

The full line-up comprises of:
  • Martin & Eliza Carthy - the good Doctor Martin Carthy and his twice Mercury nominated daughter Eliza Carthy, join forces to perform songs from their first duo album ever!
  • Michael Chapman - born in Leeds, he first became known on the London and Cornish folk circuits in 1966 and is known as one of the UK’s best finger picking style guitar players!
  • Chris Sherburn, Denny Bartley, Emily Sanders - Chris and Denny bring their unique sound and Emily’s fiddle playing and singing adds a new depth to what will surely be a memorable set!
  • Louise Jordan - fuelled by an untamed spirit, her music is authentic and timeless, underpinned by an unassuming natural elegance that places simple honesty alongside bold imagination!
  • Mia And The Moon - combining early folk festival influences with the urban, contemporary styles of today, the two sisters distinctive, gospel sound, reaches out to people of all ages!
  • Salutation - a group of young people from Lincolnshire who play traditional folk music, blending beautiful harmonic singing with imaginative instrumentation and arrangements!
No need to worry about searching for food and drinks on the day either, there will be a range of alcoholic/non-alcoholic beverages, real ales available and a varied menu that should meet everyone's taste!

Don't miss out on Lincoln Folk, Roots & World Music Festival 2 on Saturday 10th June
The festival will take place at Lincoln Drill Hall, Free School Lane, Lincoln, Lincolnshire LN2 1EY

BIG MACHINE
Pioneering English traditional folk powerhouse, Eliza Carthy, first assembled the Wayward Band in 2013 in order to explore and celebrate her long and varied career in folk music, ‘the last truly underground music scene’. To do this Eliza put together a team of hugely talented musicians from across the UK and together they hit the road to promote her ‘Best Of’ compilation, Wayward Daughter, which coincided with a biography of the same name. Eliza and the Wayward Band loved playing together so much – as well as becoming a festival favourite – that it seemed natural and inevitable, as well as characteristically ambitious, that this 12-piece would set about recording an album. The result is ‘Big Machine’, recorded at the renowned Real World and Rockfield Studios and produced by the multi-talented Jim Sutherland. The Wayward Band line-up is a veritable dream team of musicians comprising Sam Sweeney (Bellowhead), David Delarre (Mawkin), Barn Stradling (Blowzabella), Saul Rose, Beth Porter, Lucy Farrell (Emily Portman Trio), Will Molleson, Andrew Waite (Tyde), Laurence Hunt, Nick Malcolm and Adrien ‘Yen-Yen’ Toulouse.

The material on Big Machine represents a healthy slice of everything good that is happening in traditional music now, across a sparkling spectrum of sound. The album features three contemporary songs; Eliza’s own “You Know Me” about the refugee crisis and notions of hospitality (featuring MC Dizraeli), a powerful cover of Ewan Maccoll’s Radio Ballad “The Fitter’s Song” (at the behest of Peggy Seeger – and the song which inspired the album title) and an affectionate reworking of Rory McLeod's “Hug You Like a Mountain”, re-imagined here as a duet with Teddy Thompson.
There are also several examples of the Broadside ballad collections housed in Chetham’s Library in Manchester given a new twist with music by Eliza and the band. This follows a programme Eliza presented for BBC Radio 4 about the Manchester Ballads, covering everything from songs about and caused by domestic abuse (“Devil in the Woman”, the sumptuous and searing “Fade and Fall (Love Not)”, to the seafaring life in “The Sea”. Added to that a couple of brilliantly constructed instrumentals, a song about dying from custard poisoning and a heartbreaking traditional ballad “I Wish that the Wars were all Over” (performed live with the band onstage in Real World Studios’ Studio One and featuring Irish superstar Damien Dempsey), and you begin to get the picture. A very big picture, a Big Machine firing on all cylinders.
Big Machine is certainly one of Eliza Carthy’s most adventurous and accomplished works to date – and given that Eliza is the most passionate and groundbreaking English traditional singer of her generation, ‘Big Machine’ is an album you really won’t want to miss.
BIG MACHINE is released on the 3rd February 2017
and available to pre-order now from:

The Summer is A-Coming and Winter's Gone Away, Topic Records News

The summer is a-coming in,
and winter’s gone away-o

Throughout the summer months, there’s plenty of our favourite folk music to enjoy at concerts and festivals across the land.

Eliza Carthy and the Wayward Band start their festival programme at the Yorkshire Festival in Leeds on July 2nd, continuing with the following appearances:
31st July - Cambridge Folk Festival
19th August - FolkEast, Glenham
27th August - Tønder Festival (Official), Denmark
28th August - Purbeck Valley Folk Festival
29th August - Shrewsbury Folk Festival

Martin Simpson has some festival solo shows and these select duo appearances with Dom Flemons, ‘The American Songster’:
17th July - Larmer Tree Festival SALISBURY
23rd July - The Village Pump Folk Festival WESTBURY
24th July - Folk by the Oak @ Hatfield House HATFIELD
31st July - Sidmouth FolkWeek SIDMOUTH

Our friends at Fledg’ling Records will shortly be releasing Ever Popular Favourites - an infectious selection of songs recorded by Mr. Simpson and Mr. Flemons on tour in the autumn of last year.

Six of the best!

Each month our special offers are a great way of filling the gaps in your music collection, or to give as splendid gifts for friends. The Topic special offers for July are six classic albums from the Topic catalogue at the very special price of only £6 each:

TSCD 298  JUNE TABOR ~ Airs and Graces
TSCD 452   MARTIN CARTHY ~ Right Of Passage
TSCD 475  WATERSON:CARTHY
TSCD 517 DAVE SWARBRICK ~ Rags, Reels & Airs
TSCD 563  The WATERSONS ~ FROST AND FIRE
TSCD 567  MARTIN SIMPSON ~ Prodigal Son

With accompaniment from Martin Carthy and Diz Disley, Rags, Reels & Airs is by the master fiddle-player Dave Swarbrick, who sadly recently passed away. Topic is proud to have arguably Dave’s finest album in its catalogue - the perfect example of the nature of folk music moving with the times, Dave’s modern techniques and ideas applied to traditional instrumental styles.

Our good friends at Fledg’ling Records have a very exciting release due in August, four previously unissued recordings by the wonderful Anne Briggs.
‘Four Songs’ will be released as a vinyl EP, with rare photos, three BBC recordings from the radio series ‘Folk-Song Cellar’, plus one song privately recorded by one of Anne’s oldest friends.

Anne herself has been very excited about the project: “…the results couldn't have been better. Nice the way it came about too, with lost recordings and old friends caring for them for decades.”

An Anne Briggs ‘lost classic’ is one of the albums on special offer this month from Fledg’ling; Sing A Song For You, recorded in 1973 with Steve Ashley’s band Ragged Robin, was intended to be the follow-up to Anne’s CBS album ‘The Time Has Come’, but remained unreleased until Fledg’ling issued it on CD in 1996. As with the other three great Fledg’ling titles here, it is now on sale at the special price of only £6 each:

FLED 3008  ANNE BRIGGS ~ Sing A Song For You
FLED 3023  SHIRLEY COLLINS ~ Adieu To Old England
FLED 3024  HELEN WATSON ~ Doffing
FLED 3051  DAVY GRAHAM ~ Hat
