Latest News From Topic Records - June 2017.

This month Topic Records focus on what is regarded to be one of the greatest acoustic folk albums of all time, Nic Jones Penguin Eggs. Released in June 1980 it was critically acclaimed and named "Folk Album of the Year" by Melody Maker.

Nic Jones was greatly influenced by Martin Carthy, whose percussive guitar style he adopted for his own, Nic first surfaced during the late 1960s as a member of the group the Halliard, mounting a solo career in 1970 with his debut album 'Ballads And Songs'. Nic continued to release solo records and appeared on albums for artists like Richard Thompson and June Tabor.

Sadly, Nic’s recording and performing career was tragically cut short when, returning home after a gig a Glossop Folk Festival in February 1982 he was involved in a serious traffic accident that left him in intensive care and hospitalised for some eight months. His injuries were such that he now only performs for his own pleasure. A truly tragic loss to the Folk World.

The rarity and beauty of Nic Jones recordings only add to their status as truly remarkable recordings.

Nic Jones will forever be a cornerstone in the history of English Folk.

NIC JONES DVD released by Topic

NIC JONES DVD released by Topic
Following a truly magical string of Nic and Joe Jones live concerts last month, Nic Jones fans can now enjoy a new Topic DVD containing the superb documentary shown last year on BBC Four.

The Enigma of Nic Jones DVD has the added bonus of seven complete performances of songs exclusive to this release:
The Nic Jones Trio perform three songs in rehearsal, 'Master Kilby', 'Rue The Day' and 'I Only Spoke Portuguese'; Eliza Carthy plays a stunning version of '10,000 Miles'; Blair Dunlop's interpretation of 'Canadee-I-O' clearly shows how Nic's guitar-playing influences younger performers, and Nic's former Bandoggs bandmate Pete Coe plays one of Nic's live staples, 'On a Monday Morning' and a Bandoggs favourite, 'Astley's Ride/Up and Away'.

'...the photography's gorgeous, the talking-head interviews are heartfelt and enlightening, and the comeback footage... is tentative but often deeply moving.' Time Out

Topic's 75th Anniversary vinyl

Topic's 75th Anniversary vinyl

As part of Topic's 75th anniversary celebrations they are very proud to release a series of strictly limited edition 7" vinyl EPs and singles. In 1939 the first release was a shellac 78rpm - ‘The Man That Waters The Workers’ Beer’ / ‘The Internationale’ - 75 years and many technological shifts later, they are releasing a series of vinyl records to celebrate a continuing love affair with a piece of plastic that is still the most exciting format on which to listen to recorded music.

Topic have beautiful facsimile editions of the rare 1963 EPs from Shirley Collins and Anne Briggs:

Nic Jones makes his debut on 7" single with two tracks from his classic Penguin Eggs album, and we still have a few copies of the Martin & Eliza Carthy - Happiness single:
