This month Topic Records focus on what is regarded to be one of the greatest acoustic folk albums of all time, Nic Jones Penguin Eggs. Released in June 1980 it was critically acclaimed and named "Folk Album of the Year" by Melody Maker. Nic Jones was greatly influenced by Martin Carthy, whose percussive guitar style he adopted for his own, Nic first surfaced during the late 1960s as a member of the group the Halliard, mounting a solo career in 1970 with his debut album 'Ballads And Songs'. Nic continued to release solo records and appeared on albums for artists like Richard Thompson and June Tabor. Sadly, Nic’s recording and performing career was tragically cut short when, returning home after a gig a Glossop Folk Festival in February 1982 he was involved in a serious traffic accident that left him in intensive care and hospitalised for some eight months. His injuries were such that he now only performs for his own pleasure. A truly tragic loss to the Folk World. A seven piece funk outfit The Jig recently celebrated the release of its third album Proximo Disco.

The Jig is is one of few genuine professional funk bands, a tight pack that writes and plays only original tunes. Funk is an essential element of most popular music including hiphop, pop, disco and dance. The Jig from Amsterdam delivers the real deal, sounding urgent and up-to-date with their feverish horns, hairdo-disrupting guitar, sawing synths plus Hammond, face-slapping bass and uptight drums. They performed on many prominent stages and festivals in Holland and toured regularly through Germany, Belgium, Spain, France, USA and Brazil.

On Proximo Disco the band collaborates for the first time with a singer on three tracks: Mr. Ruben Seyferth. Although the instrumental band despises singers in general, they love Mr. Ruben who is joining the group for a large part of the set on live occasions. His voice can be described as a combination of Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Prince.

During the trip we collected audio-recordings and video material. We’ve seen that the elders are in charge of these rich and complex musical traditions, which reflect the world philosophy of the San people. It has been an incredible experience so far and we are proud to announce that we will continue with a full scope research in collaboration with the Museums Association of Namibia. June this year we will return to the Kalahari to collaborate with these four San grandmothers on recordings and performances together. We look forward to sharing this rich and valuable culture with the world. I'm back home for now and seeing my throat specialist this week to just make sure there are no infections and to assess the state of my vocal chords. I'll also be working with a top vocal coach to train my voice and find ways to maintain good technique and strength. I, along with Lindsay, Bob and Wayne are determined to go ahead with the U.K. tour and I'll be doing everything possible to make sure that happens. We really love how supportive you've been all along and the last thing we want to do is to let you down or keep you in the dark so, as far as we're concerned at this time, we'll see you in November so don't go making other plans!!
