And don't forget their annual local Xmas show at the Spinning Top Stockport on Wed 20th Dec

The Little Unsaid - Full Band Tour October
2022 + Festivals
The Little Unsaid is a musical vehicle for the diverse music of
songwriter and band leader John Elliott. Born out of the English indie-roots
scene of the 00’s, The Little Unsaid have built up a solid committed following,
received glowing reviews and gained the attention of national media since
signing with UK independent Reveal Records (home to award winning international
artists such as Joan as Police Woman, Lau, Kris Drever and Eddi Reader).
In 2021 The Little Unsaid released two albums: the full band
& experimental “Lick The
Future’s Lips” followed by a contrasting, intimate solo winter
music reflection “December
Songs”.
Both albums were played on radio and reviewed with acclaim, and
awarded Album of The Month by Folk Radio UK (the number one roots media
platform in the UK). The band has frequently collaborated with renowned
producer Graeme Stewart (who alongside engineering for Radiohead has produced
Oscar-nominated film scores by Jonny Greenwood) and have received several
awards for their work including: the Steve Reid InNOVAtion Award (PRS
Foundation & Gilles Peterson, with mentoring from FourTet) and Help
Musicians Emerging Excellence Award.
The band have played a variety of major Festivals (including
Glastonbury) and their recent UK tour was described as “a soaring piece of sonic beauty…one
hell of a show” (MusoMuso). During the Covid lockdowns, John
created the Relay album project, collaborating on two covers albums with
artists including Billy Bragg and Frank Turner to raise money for the Music Venue
Trust.

Fay
has teamed up once again with fiddle maestro Sam Sweeney and Rob Harbron on concertina to tour songs from her new album, Wrackline, and some old
favourites.
Exploring
ideas of the space between, Wrackline
was inspired by ghosts, fairies, spirits and talking animals to understand what
it is about the unknown that entrances us. Working with traditional materials
and ideas, Fay explores the feelings they evoke and how they relate to her
experience in the contemporary world. Universal ideas of death, love,
motherhood echo through time and space. Playing with these difficult ideas through
the eyes of an unobtainable other, whether that be the spirit of a dearly
departed, a fairy from another realm, or the thoughts animals have, gives us
space to work through very real social problems.
Shifting
between lighthearted stories about drunks sitting with pigs, to darker
questions about infanticide, Fay breaths life and meaning into old stories
presenting them with a fresh twist and consummate musicianship from Sweeney and
Harbron including fiddle, concertina, guitar and banjo.
Expect to be enveloped in music, woven through magical stories and
teased into thinking about your relationship with the world around you.
27 year-old Edinburgh born
singer-songwriter Adam Holmes is one of the brightest rising stars on the UK
roots music scene, with influences from either side of the Atlantic mixing
traditional and contemporary folk with his own brand of soul and Americana.
Twice nominated for BBC Radio 2
Folk Awards, his first two albums were also nominated for Scottish Album of
the Year in 2014 & 2017, and there is much anticipation as to whether he
can make it three in a row this year with his third album ‘Midnight Milk’.
His first album, ‘Heirs &
Graces’, was produced by John Wood (producer of all Nick Drake’s albums and
John Martyn’s iconic ‘Solid Air’ album) and mastered by Simon Heyworth
(co-producer of Mike Oldfield’s ‘Tubular Bells’) and second album, ‘Brighter
Still’, features two-time BRIT award winner Eddi Reader on backing vocals throughout.
His latest album was recorded in
his one bedroomed flat in Edinburgh, complete with full brass section, an
eighteen piece choir and a widescreen folk/soul/electronica production,
influenced by a 2016 collaboration with Adrian Utley of Portishead, Dominic
Aitchison of Mogwai and Martin Green of Lau.
A rare solo tour, stripped back and
showcasing the songs, giving them the space they deserve.

The Lumineers' new rendition
of "Silent Night" serves a higher purpose: The next years’ worth of
proceeds from the band's cover of the Christmas classic will benefit the
National Independent Venue Association's Emergency Relief Fund in the USA.
Wesley Schultz and
Lauren Jacobson's harmonies make this version of "Silent Night" the
Lumineers' own. They're accompanied throughout, simply. by Jeremiah Fraites on
piano, while strings take the place of their voices to conclude the song.
A video for the
Lumineers' version of "Silent Night" spotlights some of the United
States' most beloved independent music venues, which have been forced to close
for most of 2020 due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

From rip-roaring klezmer and dynamic tango, to their self-penned
gypsy- jazz, Klezmer-ish bring a trademark twist to whatever genre takes their
fancy. Drawing inspiration from the music of bygone travellers. Four incredibly
outward-looking classically trained musicians who met whilst playing with the
Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Their fittingly titled new album ‘Dusty
Road’ sees the band freeing themselves from the "shackles" of the rigid
hierarchy of the orchestra as they explore the music of immigrants from various
cultural backgrounds who left their homelands in pursuit of a better life.
Klezmer-ish (new album out on World Music Network in
2020)
Like their music, the band's approach is incredibly flexible and
democratic, as guitarist and vocalist Rob acknowledges, "We all play equal parts in the quartet. No one is
purely accompaniment or the main voice, but we constantly swap roles. Even
Marcel on the bass very often takes the leading part and plays the melody rather
than just sticking to the bass line as you would expect. This certainly
introduces an unusual sound world." It's an approach very much in evidence
on the classic album opener 'Klezmer's Freilach' where the band bring in and out
of focus each instrumental element to the music. This gives the music a fluidity
and constantly changing dynamism unto its own, as the album takes you on a
wide-ranging journey of musical styles from Klezmer, tango, gypsy- jazz and
beyond. What makes Klezmer-ish so special is their passion for exploring
exciting new areas whilst retaining the grounded excellence of their rigorous
training as classical musicians. The band however play with a palpable sense of
freedom and are not aiming for perfect renditions of the originals or trying to
play in an 'authentic' style, but rather to tailor these pieces to their own
personal taste and give them their own unique twist. Whether it be the re-
interpreting of tango pieces 'Volver' and 'Kicho' by the genres most famous sons
Carlos Gardel and Astor Piazzolla, or letting loose on multi- instrumentalist
Rob's two self-penned gypsy- jazz inspired compositions 'September Sun' and
'Dusty Road', their approach is always true and respectful to the genre whilst
at the same time offering a distinctly fresh approach.
From the deeply moving Hebrew song by Shem Tov Levi 'Amud Ha'Esh',
which was used for the documentary television series of the Israel Broadcasting
Authority "Pillar Of Fire" in 1981, to the greatly contrasting Romanian tunes
'Pendelasul Fetelor' and 'Doina And Street Melody', this collection of a dozen
pieces demonstrates the bands outward looking approach and desire to challenge
themselves outside of the hierarchical structure and strict rules of the
symphony orchestra. In the words of the band "There is no such thing with Klezmer- ish. No boss!
All equals. No rules or regulations. It is all led by the music, and by the
mutual respect we have for each other's talent."

Difford
Chris brings his ‘Up the Junction’ tour providing mores stories from
the kitchen sink. A stand up and sit-down night of tales and songs from his past
in Squeeze.
Chris Difford is a rare breed. As a member of one of London’s
best-loved bands, the Squeeze co-founder has made a lasting contribution to
music with hits such as ‘Cool For Cats’, ‘Up The Junction’, ‘Labelled With
Love’, ‘Hourglass’ and ‘Tempted’. Despite the fact that Chris has helped
soundtrack so many fans’ lives since his first release in 1977, the passion for
innovation and love of playing still drives him to carry on writing rather than
sit back and admire his handiwork. For over 40 years he has been writing with
Glenn Tilbrook, very much the Odd Couple.
Over the course of a 13 album career with Squeeze, it was clear from
the very beginning that Chris Difford has few peers when it comes to smart,
pithy lyricism. His ‘kitchen sink-drama’ style has drawn plaudits from fans on
both sides of the Atlantic, while his influence is keenly felt today. The likes
of Lily Allen and Mark Ronson, Kasabian, Razorlight and The Feeling have all
recognised the debt they owe to Squeeze’s music and to Difford’s way with words,
while journalists were moved by his winning combination with Glenn Tilbrook to
dub the pair ‘The New Lennon and McCartney’.
Chris first learned to stand on his own when he wrote the lyrics for
the fictional band Strange Fruit in the 1998 British comedy film ‘Still Crazy’,
for which he won his first Ivor Novello award. Since then he has written and
contributed lyrics for the likes of Elton John, Wet Wet Wet, Jools Holland, Paul
Carrack, Lisa Stansfield and Bryan Ferry.
Chris has curated ‘Songs In The Key Of London’ event at the Barbican,
bringing together musicians old and new such as Glenn Tilbrook, Suggs, Jools
Holland, Blaine Harrison (Mystery Jets) and James Hunter, as well as students
from the local community. A second event took place in Greenwich Park in 2011
with Gary Kemp, Chris Wood, UB40 and others. In 2014 ‘Songs In The Key Of
London’ took place in Regents park with Gregory Porter, The Strypes, Guy Barker
Ed Harcourt and Sophie Ellis Baxter.
Chris hosts songwriter workshops and has done so for over 25 years.
In 2014 he formed a partnership with ‘The Buddy Holly Foundation’ to run a week
of writing at Pennard House Glastonbury. Other writing events include Guardian
Master Classes held in London and smaller events at The Rathfinney Wine Estate
in East Sussex.

Boo is well known as one of the greatest songwriter performers in the
business, but incredibly, its been 7 years since Boo released his last studio
album of original material 'God Bless The Pretty
Things'. Not that he's been inactive, far from it, the period has been the
most productive of his career. Boo wrote Radio Ballads for the BBC's Olympic and
recent Child Migration series. There has been a huge array of writing and
producing with both established and upcoming artists and passing something on to
budding writers via his much loved song-writing workshops. Boo spent three years
writing a daily blog which lead to podcast fun with that staff of The WORD (RIP)
and invitations to join Radio broadcasts such as The Verb (BBC Radio 3) and a
moment of personal satisfaction when his work was included in the radio round up
Pick Of The Week on BBC Radio 4. Boo formed the duo State Of The Union with
American guitarist Brooks Williams and recorded and released two albums and an
EP, live in the studio with engineer Mark Freegard, the duo appeared on BBC1 TV
Andrew Marr show performing their cover of Pet Shop Boys Rent.
Boo has written lyrics and played on over 30 new recordings by and
with other artists during the period including the acclaimed 2014 album
(Vagabond) and 2015 EP (Back The Dogs) with Scottish singer Eddi Reader, Last
Man Standing Ep (2015) with Kris Drever of Lau and Duke Special. Reveal Records
compiled the first document of his career to date with a fine Best of
compilation My Name In Brackets and swiftly
followed that with an album of lost recordings found in a box! This album was
Open which received five star reviews and
was number 5 in the Telegraph Albums of The Year 2015.
His new album Swimming in Mercury
was released this month to critical acclaim.
“I felt like I had to wait for the
right time to tell some old stories, working on the Best of compilation My Name
In Brackets and finding the Open recordings took me back a little, each song a
placed me in a memory. I soon realised I had to go further and revisit the time
when I was first making music. Taking the bus down to Rough Trade in London with
my demo tape Julia, playing cheap guitars with broken strings.
For Swimming In Mercury and Born I
have used instruments I’ve not used for years. The process has been more akin to
when I was starting out in an indie band. I used my father’s old beat up piano
and I wrote some songs with my son, Ben which was great. The lyrics came fast, I
trusting my pen.
Boo will also be touring with his band doing a few exclusive dates in
December (11/12/15/ 17 available), here is the line-up:
Boo - vocals and guitar Chris Pepper - drums Chris Bradbury - guitar and keyboards Mark Ellis - Bass

Avital Raz - Male Order Bride (new
single)
Jerusalem-born Avital Raz has recently gained notoriety for her
taboo-busting song lyrics largely centred around themes of gender, politics and
religion. She started out as a child singer of classical music in Jerusalem.
After completing degrees in vocal performance and composition, she shifted her
focus to India where she studied the ancient art of Dhrupad singing. This album
weaves through Americana, Baroque choral singing, Indian drones and Middle
Eastern Makam. She is now settled in Sheffield, UK and released her latest album
'The Fallen Angel's
Unravelling Descent' on Sotones on 1 April.
All the songs on the album deal with estrangement in its many forms
and the unravelling that ensues.
"Should be
checked out by every female singer-songwriter as an example of how to explore
uncomfortable parameters of gender, politics and spirituality with the voice of
a real pioneer, not another formulaic mouthpiece."- R2 Magazine
The new single ‘Male Order Bride’ (release date 8 March 2017) is a
wry commentary on modern 'gender equality'. Its catchy chorus "I'm still working for the
man" is a reminder that the class struggle still begins at home - in the
kitchen and the bedroom. There couldn't be a better time to call out the
exploitation that seems to be making a comeback around the world. Accompanying
video by Chris Davis wittily intercuts archive footage with eroticised domestic
pastiche; a faceless man and a bearded woman give an edgy twist with a curious
amount of scrumptious meaty bits.
"Likely to
be the most compelling things you hear all year"- The Herald,
Scotland
Avital Raz's quirky approach to songwriting has already brought us
such cynical feminist gems as ‘Oh, Isabel’ (how to
fend off a paedophile), ‘The Edinburgh
Surprise’ (a one night stand between an Israeli and Palestinian), and ‘Blues of the Ugly
Sister’ (an alternative Cinderella story).
The recording is produced by Keith Angel and features Luke Carver
Goss (Accordion), Andy Seward (Double Bass), Dave Angel from The Angel Brothers
(Guitar), as well as Jote Osahn on Violin (formerly of Elbow), Mina Mikhael
Salama on Oud and Ney-Arabic flute (Rafiki Jazz) and Pete Harvey on cello (King
Creosote, The Leg).
