After
almost two decades experience at the forefront of the British and European Jazz
scene, Denys Baptiste still brims with the confidence of a youthful spirit. With
a stellar band that fires on all cylinders and a new home at Edition Records,
Denys’ career continues to grow and blossom. The Late Trane is his powerful and
commanding new album, reimagining and reworking ten carefully chosen
compositions from John Coltrane’s late music (from 1963 - 1967) with a fresh and
modern new interpretation.
Elliot
Galvin is a gifted composer and pianist, whose maverick imagination and magpie
like ability to blend a disparate world of influences into his own unique
musical vision, has seen him compared to Django Bates… although in truth he
sounds like no one except himself. From de-constructing standards, to creating
his own micro-tonal melodica, Galvin’s music is both playful and deadly serious
drawing on a wide range of influences from Keith Jarrett to Stravinsky, Deerhoof
and The Beatles as well as the films of David Lynch, and the literature of James
Joyce.

STILLHOUSE are a progressive and inventive acoustic trio based in
York. The line-up features mandolin, guitar, double bass and vocal trio
ensemble, presenting original songs and instrumental material with roots in
bluegrass and contemporary folk. Captivating & thoughtful original
compositions and impressively stylish. The band members are Jonny Neaves
(guitar, vocals) and Polly Bolton (mandolin, vocals) who have been collaborating
since their teens and Matthew Mefford (double bass) who has roots in his
hometown of Austin, Texas and spent the years before his move to the UK touring
the States with bluegrass/jazz/folk quartet MilkDrive. Together, they have created a
captivating and complex sound characterised by melodic original songs alongside
soaring mandolin, guitar and bass-led instrumental pieces with roots in
bluegrass, old time, folk melodies and beautiful songwriting.
"They're all such amazing players. It's a rare thing these days,
but they do it with finesse and style and it's never showboaty, just pure class"
- Chris Helme
(Seahorses)
2017 marked the first anniversary of the band, as well as the release
of their first 7-track EP, Love is the
Weight. The trio has been busy sharing this first offering with their
burgeoning audiences across the UK and are looking forwards to releasing their
first full length album in 2018. Not only are they capable of writing and
arranging top drawer songs, they have the additional instrumental chops to go
with it. This trio will soon be causing a stir. Wonderful musicianship and
superbly well-arranged material; Stillhouse completely captivate their audience
from the first note they play.
"Rich with the tone and feel of dark
Americana, but the vocal style, lyrical content and wry humour set it apart. The
production and performance is polished; a confident release from a talented band
of musicians."- FATEA

& The Biscuit Boys are more than just the world’s greatest jump, jive and
swing band – they’re an institution!
We recently asked the
band's fans to tell us what some of their favourite memories of watching the
Biscuit Boys over the last three decades are. Here's just a select few of
the dozens of responses we received:
"Going to Warwick Castle
to see a classic car show & discovering the band entirely by accident. They
carried me away with such swing they make a trebuchet useless!"
"Cleethorpes Jazz
Festival - early 1990’s. My best friend Charlotte and I were around 14 and
danced from the moment you started! I’m 40 now and seen you several times since.
You’re still awesome!"
"Hard to choose a
favourite, because every time has been fantastic. Had some fabulous nights with
my family enjoying KP & I love taking new friends to see them, knowing they
are going to have a great time too. Probably my favourite has to be at the Hare
& Hounds where I danced so much I couldn't walk the next
day!"
"Watching them as the
openers for the Blues Brothers Band. They kicked butt!!"
"Dancing with my partner
between the seats because we couldn't sit still"
"First time at the
Buttermarket, Shrewsbury, I was entranced and thrown back in time with the
pulsating rhythm which took my breath away, and found it impossible to keep my
feet still"
"I was gobsmacked with
the musicianship and stage presence of these guys, great laughter as
well."
"Sitting down watching
the band on a Sunday at Y Not every year since we started going, best band at
the festival"

FRIDAY 7TH SEPTEMBER
with GREG RUSSELL & CIARAN ALGAR Greg Russell and Ciaran Algar are two time BBC Folk Award winners and are two of the most sought after UK folk-rock duos. It could be their take on traditional songs, their empathy, infectious concerts or the way they tackle topical issues. Whatever it is, Greg Russell and Ciaran Algar have got it Since they got together in 2011 the pair have released four albums, the latest of which ' Utopia & Wasteland' came out at the beginning of 2018. All feature Greg's superb guitar playing and voice that is ideally suited to the folk genre, whilst award winning fiddle player drives the music along. Live they bounce off each other, with entertaining tales of life on the road and beyond. Their camaraderie and playing is infectious and leads to a thoroughly entertaining evening.
