The year 2017 was filled with musical travels for Namibian Tales. From freezing
Switzerland (January) to Amman Jazz Festival in Jordan (April) and performances in Germany (May).
The Namibian Tales quartet then took to the Kalahari in June, where they teamed
up with the four San singers to rehearse and perform together in Namibia and create
their critically acclaimed album “Kalahari Encounters” together.
This live recording won Best World Music Album Produced in Netherlands 2017
by Mixed World Music and was reviewed in Folk Roots magazine.
The quartet performed at several venues during the Shanghai World Music F
estival China (October) and gave a showcase at “Visa For Music” in Rabat, Morocco
in November.
In December, Shishani Vranckx & Sjahin During returned to the Kalahari to
present the album to the ladies and continued their work archiving music from
different San communities in collaboration with the Museums Association of
Namibia and UNESCO.
This year the quartet will be giving a showcase at the Seoul Music Festival in
South Korea.
Currently the group is preparing the CD release tour for “Kalahari Encounters”
which will take place in Europe during the summer together with the San singers
from the Kalahari!

SPECIAL PROJECT: COLLABORATION WITH THE SAN PEOPLE, BUSHMEN OF NAMIBIA.
On the 5th of November 2016, we embarked on a musical research in the Kalahari Desert of Namibia. Our aim was to find out more about the musical traditions of the San (‘Bushmen’) communities living in the area of Tsumkwe, the largest town in this desolate area. After intensive research we found a group of four grandmothers with a beautiful and diverse repertoire. Their rhythms and polyphony are highly complex and has us left with lots of homework. During the trip we collected audio-recordings and video material. We’ve seen that the elders are in charge of these rich and complex musical traditions, which reflect the world philosophy of the San people. It has been an incredible experience so far and we are proud to announce that we will continue with a full scope research in collaboration with the Museums Association of Namibia. June this year we will return to the Kalahari to collaborate with these four San grandmothers on recordings and performances together. We look forward to sharing this rich and valuable culture with the world.

About the debut album, released by World Music Network / Riverboat Records:
The whole album was recorded in 3 days at Wavelength Studios in the UK. The album was then produced and mixed by Glenn Sharp and mastered at POB Audio. The album includes all the very best from ‘Calaita Flamenco Son’ with traditional flamenco palos such as ‘alegrias’, ‘bulerias’ and ‘seguiriyas’, and the more popular sounds of flamenco rumba, including the amazing song ‘un mensajito’ by Chico Pere, always a popular encore at their live shows. The album has a little something for everyone. The aim of this album was to capture the energy and spontaneity of their live shows and this is achieved perfectly.
