Findlay Napier

“Songcraft and wit in the Difford & Tilbrook tradition” - (Sunday Herald)

"Michael Marra meets Elvis Costello. . . Napier oozes class” - (Folk Radio UK)

“A beautiful amalgam of Scottish soul, funk and folk” - (Irish American Times)

“More rock’n’roll than 50 shitty indie bands” - (BluesBunny)

“Weird” - (Sunday Mail)

As defined in the title of his remarkable 2015 solo debut VIP: Very Interesting Persons (No.2 in the Daily Telegraph’s top dozen folk albums that year), Scottish singer-songwriter (and sometime stand-up comic) Findlay Napier categorically commands musical VIP status.

Co-written and produced by revered UK songsmith Boo Hewerdine, VIP’s ten biographical tracks, invoking real-life sources from Hedy Lamarr to a cave-dwelling Scottish tramp, marked another career high for Napier, building on plaudits and awards for his previous line-ups Back of the Moon, Queen Anne’s Revenge and The Bar Room Mountaineers.

He now turns those same supreme songwriting and storytelling gifts, allied with magpie-minded imagination and truly magnificent vocals, to his adoptive home town, on VIP’s hotly anticipated follow-up, Glasgow.

Continuing his collaboration with Hewerdine, the new album combines freshly-penned originals with classics and rarities from Glasgow’s vast and colourful ballad canon, by authors as diverse as Hamish Imlach and The Blue Nile. Together, they form an extended musical love-letter to Scotland’s metropolis, celebrating 20 years since Napier first arrived as a student, swapping his idyllic Highland childhood home for the 14th floor of the city’s notorious (and since demolished) Red Road flats.

In 2016, too, Napier launched the Glasgow Songwriting Festival, a weekend of workshops and performances which completely sold out its inaugural outing, and returns in 2017: featured artists to date include Karine PolwartEmma Pollock, the aforementioned Abbott and Stanley Odd MC Dave Hook. In between putting the finishing touches to Glasgow, Napier also toured in spring 2017 with acclaimed contemporary protest-song showcase Shake the Chains.__

Despite these ecumenical enthusiasms, Napier himself remains happy to identify as a folk singer – even if he does enjoy stretching the term’s already elastic parameters. It’s also a definition true to Napier’s earliest inspirations. He grew up in a musical family (brother Hamish is also a leading musician), and while early piano lessons proved a non-starter, singing was part and parcel of everyday life.

As with many of Scotland’s under-40 generation of folk-based artists, these nascent passions were brought fully to life by Napier’s involvement, from age 12, in the Highlands’ Fèis network of youth music festivals, whose tutors quickly spotted and encouraged his vocal talent, meanwhile steering him to learn guitar. A particular mentor was the great Highland singer-songwriter Jim Hunter, at whose urging Napier successfully applied for the new Scottish Music degree course at the then Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland), moving to Glasgow to join its inaugural intake.

While his chosen running routes around Glasgow have further deepened his acquaintance with the city, directly inspiring several songs on the new album, another recent addition to Napier’s creative armoury is his burgeoning comedy career. A longtime fan of the funnyman’s art, he signed up for some beginners’ workshops a couple of years back, after reading Stewart Lee’s analytical account of his craft, How I Escaped My Certain Fate: The Life and Deaths of a Stand-Up Comedian. Dauntlessly taking the plunge into the local comedy circuit, Napier has since progressed rapidly from five-minute open slots to a gig at 2017’s Glasgow International Comedy Festival.

“Part of what blew my mind about the Stewart Lee book,” he explains, “was seeing the similarities about holding an audience, structuring a set, how you make people laugh – and realising the amount of thought he puts into these things. And they’re totally transferable skills: doing the comedy has been a massive help for me playing solo, a massive confidence-builder. Hopefully, it’s made my patter a bit funnier, too.”

In this context, as well as calling himself a folk singer, Napier simultaneously aspires to another, likewise timeless role: “I do love that old-fashioned, all-round idea of an ‘entertainer’ - I think it’s a brilliant thing,” he says. “But then that’s totally what the best folk singers are; they’ll have you in absolute hysterics, in between punching you in the gut - people like Loudon Wainwright, John Prine, Michael Marra: that’s the absolute pinnacle, as far as I’m concerned."

Promoter Testimonials

"It's a rare moment when reality exceeds anticipation and from the first song to the final encore, the audience were totally enthralled. Findlay Napier simply delivers on all counts and is one of the finest singer / songwriters to have graced a Lincoln stage." - Alan Ritson Promoter at The Old Bakery & The Drill Hall, Broadcaster Siren FM and Lincoln City FM

"A very clever songwriter. Findlay’s material is varied, thoughtful and very well executed but most of all he is an engaging performer who makes you think, smile and just simply enjoy yourself. His CD , ‘Very Interesting Persons’ is a gem and it is a resident on my i-Pod"- Maggie Wood, The Ram Club, Thames Ditton

"We are treated to an evening of old-fashioned storytelling of a kind you rarely see in 2016. Think campfires and tradition, past voices being handed down, characters that spring up from the soil of childhood and a curiosity-bone last seen holding up a Tyrannosaurus Rex...All human life is here, given a beating heart via Napier’s warm handshake of a voice and memorable melodies... What a terrific way to spend an evening, in the company of someone who oozes class, so much so it barely looks like he breaks a sweat." - Paul Woodgate, FRUK/Poor Little Fish

Lincoln Folk, Roots & World Music Festival Two Sat 10 June 2017

Lincoln Folk, Roots & World Music Festival 2 on Saturday 10th June 2017

Before we know it summer will be upon us, and by popular demand, so will this festival......
Showcasing the quality of live music in the UK; with Martin & Eliza Carthyheadlining and five other very special acts in the line-up, this will undoubtedly be another great festival and an occasion not to miss!

For more than 40 years Martin Carthy has been one of folk music's greatest innovators, one of its best loved, most enthusiastic and, at times, most quietly controversial of figures. His skill, stage presence and natural charm have won him many admirers, not only from within the folk scene, but also far beyond it. Trailblazing musical partnerships with, amongst others, Steeleye Span, Dave Swarbrick and his award-winning wife (Norma Waterson) and daughter Eliza Carthy have resulted in more than 40 albums, but Martin has only recorded 10 solo albums, of which the much anticipated Waiting for Angels (Topic TSCD527) was the latest. In the folk clubs (which he continues to champion), on the concert stage or making TV appearances (he was the subject of the acclaimed `Originals' music documentary strand on BBC 2) - there are few roles that Martin Carthy hasn't played.

Martin is a ballad singer, a ground-breaking acoustic and electric-guitarist and an authoritative interpreter of newly composed material. He always prefers to follow an insatiable musical curiosity rather than cash in on his unrivalled position. Perhaps, most significant of all, are his settings of traditional songs with guitar, which have influenced a generation of artists, including Bob Dylan and Paul Simon, on both sides of the Atlantic.

Eliza Carthy is undoubtedly one of the most impressive and engaging performers of her generation. Twice nominated for the Mercury Prize and winner of innumerable other accolades over a 20 year career, Eliza has performed and recorded with a diverse array of artists including, Paul Weller, Rufus and Martha Wainwright, Patrick Wolf and Bob Neuwirth. More than most, Eliza Carthy has revitalised folk music and captured the most hardened of dissenters with intelligent, charismatic and boundary-crossing performance.

Eliza grew up immersed in the world of traditional music. She still divides her time between touring and recording with her legendary parents, Martin Carthy and Norma Waterson as well as engaging in numerous pioneering solo and band projects, including work with Pere Ubu and Melanie Challenger, an artist in residence in Antarctica. In what has become something of a parallel career, Eliza has co-presented the BBC Radio 3 World Music Awards, been a regular guest-presenter on the BBC Radio 2 Mark Radcliffe Show and has made many appearances on BBC TVs 'Later with Jools'. In her own right, Eliza has been the subject of an hour long ITV documentary ('Heaven & Earth') and 'My Music' on Channel 5. Comedian and writer Stewart Lee describes Eliza as 'Not the Messiah, but a very naughty girl'.

The full line-up comprises of:
  • Martin & Eliza Carthy - the good Doctor Martin Carthy and his twice Mercury nominated daughter Eliza Carthy, join forces to perform songs from their first duo album ever!
  • Michael Chapman - born in Leeds, he first became known on the London and Cornish folk circuits in 1966 and is known as one of the UK’s best finger picking style guitar players!
  • Chris Sherburn, Denny Bartley, Emily Sanders - Chris and Denny bring their unique sound and Emily’s fiddle playing and singing adds a new depth to what will surely be a memorable set!
  • Louise Jordan - fuelled by an untamed spirit, her music is authentic and timeless, underpinned by an unassuming natural elegance that places simple honesty alongside bold imagination!
  • Mia And The Moon - combining early folk festival influences with the urban, contemporary styles of today, the two sisters distinctive, gospel sound, reaches out to people of all ages!
  • Salutation - a group of young people from Lincolnshire who play traditional folk music, blending beautiful harmonic singing with imaginative instrumentation and arrangements!
No need to worry about searching for food and drinks on the day either, there will be a range of alcoholic/non-alcoholic beverages, real ales available and a varied menu that should meet everyone's taste!

Don't miss out on Lincoln Folk, Roots & World Music Festival 2 on Saturday 10th June
The festival will take place at Lincoln Drill Hall, Free School Lane, Lincoln, Lincolnshire LN2 1EY

 THE GOOD

 INTENTIONS

SUNDAY

 23rd APRIL, 2017

Lynne Hanson last played Town Hall Live in June 2016.  It is great to have her back, particularly as she will have a new album out to coincide with her latest UK Tour.
Lynne's songs are familiar and comfortable, yet fearless and strong.  On her new album 'Uneven Ground' she explores giving strong advice through song writing and fighting back against the devil within us.  Mo matter what the song, there is a weight and warmth to Lynne's lyrics
Live her performances are polished and rocking, as those who attended last year's concert will testify.  This time around The Good Intentions will consist of Brodie Mohninger on lead guitar, MJ Dandeneau on bass and Shawn Killaly on drums.  The band are known for their hard living style of music, mixing gritty ballads with driving roots tinged guitar.
Supporting will be ex Rita Payne member Rhiannon Scutt.  Since her last appearance Rhiannon has been busy writing new songs and will give them an airing at this concert.
Advance tickets are priced at £12.50.  Tickets are on sale now and can be obtained from the One Stop store in the town, from Brian on 01652 649230 or from www.wegottickets.com

  THE KENNEDYS

on Friday 12th May, 2017

Pete and Maura Kennedy (The Kennedys) are both East Coast of America natives who met each other in Austin when they were members of Nanci Griffiths Blue Moon Orchestra.  They joined forces and set out on the road.  Two decades later, in 2015, they celebrated 20 years together, both as a duo and married couple.
They have been prolific over that time and continued to play with Nanci.  In 2014 they released a tribute album to Nanci and toured the UK with it.  In 2016 they released their latest album 'West'.  It is a classic Kennedy's duo album that seamlessly weaves the couples influences over the last two decades, with Buddy Holy style roots, the tuneful cadences of the Everley Bothers and the ringing 12 string jangle of the early Byrds records.
Live they are exhilarating with Maura's beautiful vocals driven by Pete's sensational guitar style and virtuosity.
Supporting The Kennedys will be Dan Webster from York.  Dan's music is influenced by the sounds and story telling traditions of American and British folk music in it's broadest sense.
Advanced Tickets for the concert are priced at £12.50 and can be obtained from the usual outlets.  They are on sale now.

AVITAL RAZ - 'Making people feel uncomfortable since 1998!'

Male Order Bride Cover big-
Avital Raz - Male Order Bride (new single)
Jerusalem-born Avital Raz has recently gained notoriety for her taboo-busting song lyrics largely centred around themes of gender, politics and religion. She started out as a child singer of classical music in Jerusalem. After completing degrees in vocal performance and composition, she shifted her focus to India where she studied the ancient art of Dhrupad singing. This album weaves through Americana, Baroque choral singing, Indian drones and Middle Eastern Makam. She is now settled in Sheffield, UK and released her latest album 'The Fallen Angel's Unravelling Descent' on Sotones on 1 April.
All the songs on the album deal with estrangement in its many forms and the unravelling that ensues.
"Should be checked out by every female singer-songwriter as an example of how to explore uncomfortable parameters of gender, politics and spirituality with the voice of a real pioneer, not another formulaic mouthpiece." - R2 Magazine
IMG 1833 web
Avital Raz
The new single ‘Male Order Bride’ (release date 8 March 2017) is a wry commentary on modern 'gender equality'. Its catchy chorus "I'm still working for the man" is a reminder that the class struggle still begins at home - in the kitchen and the bedroom. There couldn't be a better time to call out the exploitation that seems to be making a comeback around the world. Accompanying video by Chris Davis wittily intercuts archive footage with eroticised domestic pastiche; a faceless man and a bearded woman give an edgy twist with a curious amount of scrumptious meaty bits.
"Likely to be the most compelling things you hear all year" - The Herald, Scotland
Avital Raz's quirky approach to songwriting has already brought us such cynical feminist gems as ‘Oh, Isabel’ (how to fend off a paedophile), ‘The Edinburgh Surprise’ (a one night stand between an Israeli and Palestinian), and ‘Blues of the Ugly Sister’ (an alternative Cinderella story).
The recording is produced by Keith Angel and features Luke Carver Goss (Accordion), Andy Seward (Double Bass), Dave Angel from The Angel Brothers (Guitar), as well as Jote Osahn on Violin (formerly of Elbow), Mina Mikhael Salama on Oud and Ney-Arabic flute (Rafiki Jazz) and Pete Harvey on cello (King Creosote, The Leg).
Promo copies are available on request.
