Anne Briggs – Topic Treasures Series Vinyl Re-issue.

This eponymous 1971 debut album by Anne Briggs, largely unavailable for 48 years, is widelyregarded as a pillar of any folk collection. Re-issued here as part of the   Topic Treasures series – the label’s classic and notable albums expanded in deluxe format – with rare images, new liner notes(by esteemed journalist and Briggs authority, Ken Hunt).

This debut album contains some of Briggs’ most notable songs, including ‘Blackwater Slide,’ which she famously taught to Bert Jansch, (who recorded it on his ‘Jack Orion’ album) and ‘Go Your Way,’ co-written with Jansch. As with the 1971 original, the sleeve here contains song notes by the highly-regarded English folk singer and collector of folk songs, A.L. Lloyd.

Anne Briggs began singing in local folk clubs in her teens. In 1962, she became part of the Centre 42 – a leftist group of artists, writers, actors and musicians whose aim was to make arts and culture accessible to the masses. Ewan MacColl first heard Briggs’ remarkable voice and persuaded her to join the group and tour. There Briggs met MacColl’s comrade, A.L. ‘Bert’ Lloyd who became her mentor, producing her debut EP, ‘The Hazards Of Love,’ and recording Briggs for Topic landmark albums, ‘The Iron Muse’ and ‘The Bird In The Bush.’

Briggs went on to record a follow-up album, ‘The Time Has Come,’ for CBS which, at the time, sold poorly and was rapidly deleted. Two years later, she recorded again but blocked the subsequent album’s release, disheartened as she was by her singing. She retired from the limelight, seemingly for good, although Topic’s 2019 re-issue of this debut heralded a huge resurgence of media and fan interest in this most reclusive of folk doyennes.

John Mayall To Release ‘The First Generation’ Limited Edition 35 CD Box Set

John Mayall To Release ‘The First Generation’ Limited Edition 35 CD Box Set

For nearly six decades, John Mayall’s name has been synonymous with the blues, especially in England. The man responsible for spotlighting young blues guitarists like Eric Clapton, Peter Green and Mick Taylor, as well as future superstars John McVie and Mick Fleetwood in his Blues Breakers line-ups, Mayall is the Eveready Bunny of the blues, still going and going at the age of 87.

His cumulative discography, including studio and live LPs and compilations, totals somewhere around 100 albums, and he’s also released dozens of singles. Now, through what must have been years of painstaking mining of archives and headphone time, the Madfish label of Snapper Music Ltd. has released the deluxe 35 disc box set John Mayall – The First Generation 1965 - 1974 .

With a pressing limited to 5,000 copies, this massive collection demonstrates how prolific Mayall was in his early years, though he certainly hasn’t slowed down since. The collection includes newly remastered versions of 19 of Mayall’s albums, from 1965’s John Mayall Plays
John Mayall  through 1974’s.

he Last Edition with the exception of 1969’s Primal Solos, an archival album whose songs are included as bonus tracks in other discs on this box set.The incredibly productive Mayall himself is a multi-instrumentalist, playing keyboards, harp and guitar, in fact playing all of them on the 12 tracks of his 1967 album The Blues Alone (included in this box set), recorded when multi-tracking and overdubbing were still in their infancy. He got started relatively late in life, recording his first album at the age of 31 after he’d been playing professionally for nearly a decade. A onetime art student, Mayall is also known for having designed many of his own album covers and carving his guitar bodies into works of art.

The box set was put together with John’s full cooperation. It contains: - 35 discs, including 3 CD Singles & 8 previously unreleased discs, alongside newly remastered versions of the original Decca & Polydor albums

- Seven previously unleased live recordings, including Windsor 1967, Gothenburg 1968, Berlin 1969 and San Francisco 1970, among others

- 28 unreleased BBC tracks, featuring Eric Clapton, Peter Green and Mick Taylor

- An autographed photo

- 168 page coffee table book including rare photos, posters, and memorabilia, written by Neil Slaven

- Two replica posters: Ten Years Are Gone and the official poster from the 1968 tour

- Replica press pack for John Mayall Plays John Mayall

UK Independent Venues Week - 25 to 31 January 2021

Forced to shut by various lockdowns, and otherwise faced with the prospect of trying to operate on a financial shoestring due to social distancing, an already precarious industry has been pushed ever close to the brink.

It all means that it’s more important than ever to support and celebrate our favourite gig spots — and Independent Venue Week is the perfect opportunity to do just that. Going digital for the first time, the seven-day series will feature an array of live-streamed gigs, online Q&As, radio shows, quizzes, film screenings and more, all reminding us just how important it is to protect smaller venues.

By championing these venues, we are able to highlight why they are so much more than just places for live music – they are cultural hubs for learning, creativity, arts and culture more widely connecting people
