News From Topic Records June 2019

Celebrating the first 80 years of Topic Records

New album announcement

Martin Simpson - Rooted

out 30 August on 2CD, Vinyl and Digital
Singer, songwriter and guitar virtuoso Martin Simpson will release his brand new studio album Rooted on August 30. Produced by Andy Bell and recorded in Sheffield and Oxfordshire, Rooted will be available on CD, LP and digital with the deluxe 2CD and deluxe digital versions including a bonus disc of instrumentals, Seeded.
Summing up the themes of his new album, Martin says: “The music and songs embrace nature and travel, mental health, real life stories, loss, politics and history… and the threads that bind all this together can be followed back a long way, to 1965 when I got my first guitar and started to soak up material and ideas at a very rapid rate.”

Rooted features an array of stellar guest musicians, including Nancy Kerr (fiddle and viola), Andy Cutting (melodeon and diatonic accordion), Liz Hanks (cello), John Smith (electric guitar and vocals), Ben Nicholls (string bass and electric bass guitar), Julie Matthews (vocals), Alan Barnes (clarinet), Max Simpson (vocals), Amy Smith (vocals), Chris While (vocals) and Tom A Wright (drums and percussion). Richard Hawley and Dom Flemons contribute backing vocals and bones respectively to first single ‘Neo’ (out 21st June). As well as vocals, Martin himself plays banjola, 5-string banjo, 6-string fretless banjo, electric bass guitar and electric and resonator guitars!

Martin will tour extensively in support of Rooted. See full dates here.

POOR NAMELESS BOY // (Saskatchewan, CANADA) - UK tour OCT / NOV 2019

Poor Nameless Boy
“In a world that celebrates being rich and famous, there’s something purely powerful about being poor and nameless.”
I met Joel at a recent music conference in Montreal and was immediately taken with his disarming, soft melodic delivery born from a keen perception of the human condition. This understated authenticity is why you’ll find him on the fringes of something much deeper than modern indie-folk. In his quest to retain a certain humbled anonymity, Regina-based Joel Henderson has, in fact, made himself more noticeable than ever.
Though similar to his contemporaries with his wispy, shiver-worthy vocal tones reminiscent of Donovan Woods and Gregory Alan Isakov; Henderson’s stark vulnerability sets him apart, coupled with a deep lyrical poignancy. Since the release of Activity Book (2013), and the proceeding, stunningly beautiful and acclaimed Bravery (2016); Henderson has seen some notable milestones, including a recent publishing deal and several successful tours and showcases in Canada and Europe.
Henderson’s striking grasp of life’s complexities is mirrored by a pure modesty, allowing listeners to immerse themselves into the stories, songs and experiences of Poor Nameless Boy without pretence. With no desire to be seen as a brand or commodity, his humanistic proposition is entirely irresistible, and as a songwriter, effortlessly engaging.

"Poor Nameless Boy (Joel Henderson) serves up a new generation of folk music while interacting naturally with the audience. A pleasure to have on our stage." - All Folk'd Up Music Festival
"Poor Nameless Boy actually has a name - it's Joel Henderson. The man's music bears a prime descriptor as well: classic folk/roots, Canadian-style. These warm and lovely songs need to be heard by a wider audience!" - Mark Rheaume, CBC Radio

Danny Schmidt at Kirton In Lindsey Town Hall Friday 10 May 2019

TOWN HALL LIVE
FRIDAY 10th MAY
DANNY SCHMIDT

support from Gregory S Davies and The Southern Light

Danny Schmidt is incomparable and a 'can't miss performer.
Named in the Chicago Tribune's list of '50 Most Significant Songwriters of the last 50 years.
Performing solo armed with just his voice, his acoustic guitar and acute commentary, Danny is the authentic troubadour, one man sharing the truth in the form of songs, unadorned and intimate.  The understated effect is powerful.
In March this year he released his ninth studio album 'Standard Deviation'.  It is articulate, thoughtful, intelligent and melodic, a quiet masterpiece.
All of Danny's songs carry the power of fine poetry.  They are filled with nimble wordplay and convey weight, depth and substance.
Danny Schmidt is incomparable and a can't miss performer.  His guitar playing is exceptional, where every melody can be appreciated even if there are no words.

Support comes from Yorkshire based songwriter Gregory S Davies, who will be accompanied by his band The Southern Light, which consists of Sam Jackson on bass and Jack Amblin on drums,  They have just released the album 'Pathfinder', which is rooted into a heavier sound rooted in rock.  It promotes themes of hope and unity against a backdrop of an uncertain world.

CALLAGHAN

'Callaghan's effortlessly, sweet sounding, lilting, silvery vocals take you to a sun drenched place where worries are a thing of the past'
Grantham girl made good, Callaghan is back at Town Hall Live.
Her story is well known.  In 2010, whilst living in London she sent a demo tape to Shawn Mullins.  He was impressed and invited Callaghan over to Atlanta and offered to produce her debut album 'Life in Full Colour'.  It was a classic case of taking a risk and throwing your life into upheaval to chase your dreams.  She stayed in Atlanta for three years before moving to Nashville and then LA and has played all across America.
She has recorded three more albums 'A History of Now', 'Acoustic Coffee House' and 'Callaghan' and is in the process of recording 'Acoustic Coffee House 2'
Callaghan is blessed with a beautiful sweet and soothing voice, a strong knack for pretty and harmonic melodies .  She has a warmth and purity of spirit that shines through in her performances.
