Topic Birthdays

Born 15th February 1943 Died 4th September 1998
Lal Waterson
Little introduction is needed here for Waterson group member Lal Waterson, alongside her sister Norma and brother Mike Waterson and cousin John Harrison they produced some great music for Topic Records as well as other labels through a long-career in the music business. Albums like The Watersons ‘Frost and Fire’ and ‘For Pence and Spicy Ale’ truly highlight the talent of one of the leading folk revival groups of the 60’s and 70’s.

29th February 1908 Died 29th September 1982
A L Lloyd.
Regarded as one of the most influential figures in the 1950’s – 1960’s folk song revival, A L Lloyd also known as Bert Lloyd had a remarkable and eventful career – whaler, sheep farm hand, social historian and journalist. The mastermind behind two classic Topic album recordings, ’The Iron Muse’, industrial folk songs and ‘The Bird In The Bush’, a collection of traditional erotic songs which featured early recordings by Anne Briggs. He was appointed artistic director at Topic Records in 1958 and along side Ewan MacColl was one of the biggest influences on what was released by Topic Records.

An exciting new collaboration for a select few UK dates in September 2016 (5th - 9th inclusive), two wonderfully charismatic guitarists and singer-songwriters, SALLY BARKER and BROOKS WILLIAMS.
Sally has had a fantastic career spanning over 30 years, fronting all-female supergroup THE POOZIES, collaborating with many bands and musicians including FAIRPORT CONVENTION, FOTHERINGAY, supporting BOB DYLAN and ROBERT PLANT and heaps and heaps of great people (too many to mention). More recently she appeared on THE VOICE mentored by TOM JONES and made him cry (and the audience!) several times. She's been called a singer's singer and has loads of soul. September 2015 saw the release of Sally’s next recording, the 6-track LOVE RAT ep. This CD contains 4 new songs plus live versions of ‘Voice’ favourites ‘Walk On By’ and ‘Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood’.

Sally Barker Brooks Williams Photo Graeme Oxby-2
Brooks Williams is a fantisically talented guitarist and beautifully charismatic performer. He stands on tradition but he doesn’t stand still. His influences fly so fast and furious they blur. Like drinking whiskey from a honey jar, you get both the sweet and the bite. He's universally loved across the globe.
He not only tours like a hellhound’s on his trail, and creates a super-charged music that is electrifying and fighting-fit. Brooks was born in Statesboro, Georgia (the town made famous by country-blues legend Blind Willie McTell), is a great singer. In 2013 he was nominated ‘best male vocalist’ by the UK’s foremost roots-music mavens, Spiral Earth. AmericanaUK says, “he has a beautiful voice that you just melt into.”
And he’s one helluva good guitar player, ranked in the “Top 100 Acoustic Guitarists.” The San Antonio Light says that Williams is a “fret monster who has to be seen to be believed!”

Brooks Williams writes songs that are a collision of roots and evolution. Rocking. Economical. Ironic. The arrangements are tight, and yet the performances are rich in blues pathos. Words like timeless, astute, archetypal just about cover it.
Walking the line between blues and Americana, Brooks Williams has worked stages worldwide for over 25 years, amassing a staggering back-catalogue of songs, recordings and tales. With nearly 23 CDs to his name, fRoots says Williams’ music “Americana at its finest!”

Two new titles in The Voice of the People series from Topic Records

It was mighty! It was great altogether!

On 18th March 2016 Topic will proudly release the latest volumes in the widely-acclaimed ongoing series of traditional music from these islands, The Voice of the People;  nearly 200 tracks of the most vital, dynamic music made by Irish immigrants in London over the last six decades make up two 3CD sets:
TSCD679T "It was mighty!"  There wasn't a corner of what was to become Greater London in the 1950s where there wasn't some Irish music to be heard, if you knew where to find it. This special collection of recordings presents and explores the fine examples of the music-making of those immigrants from rural Ireland who settled in London in the first couple of decades after the War.

TSCD680T "It was great altogether!"  This compilation explores the traditional Irish music which has continued to secure a place for itself in London throughout the last fifty years; demonstrating both the "old" music, completely untouched by the goings-on in Irish popular music, and the traditional music from the current scene led by second and third generation musicians.

This year’s Record Store Day celebrations take place on Saturday 16th April. On the day, Topic will be releasing an exclusive 7” vinyl single by Martin Simpson and some of his musical friends.
A double A-side, the single features Martin with Andy Cutting and Tom A. Wright on a brilliant version of Booker T. and the MGs’ ‘Green Onions’, and, on the other side, with Andy Cutting and Nancy Kerr on the classic ballad ‘Willie Taylor’.

Fledg’ling Records will also be taking part, with an exclusive reissue of a rare Shirley Collins 7” EP that originally came out on the Collector label in 1964, ‘English Songs volume 2’, in a replica flipback sleeve plus a new inner sleeve with rare photographs.

Sunday 20th

 December, 2015

With work finished for Christmas, what better way to set us all up for the festive season than a concert from DANNY & THE CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD.  Fronted by Danny George Wilson they are the UK's top band playing the Americana rock circuit.  With Paul Lush on guitar, Henry Senior Jnr on pedal steel, 'Free Jazz' Geoff Widdowson on keyboards and saxophone, Chris Clarke in bass and Steve Brooks on drums they will have us dancing in the aisles.
The band's rich mix of Americana and soul is intoxicating.  Danny's voice oozes character and the Champs are all top musicians.
Their 2103 album 'Stay True' was one of the year's best albums.  In 2014 they followed it up with a double live album 'Live Champs' recorded at The Jazz Café in London.  Early this year they brought out 'What Kind of Love'  which got 5 star reviews across the music press.
Live they are simply flawless and take the music to another level, they are like Springsteen filtered through a stack of Stax 45's.
Support will come from the charismatic Clubhouse Records artist from Rutland, Paul McClure.  The passing world is the subject of Paul's songs, in particular the loves and losses that come his way.  He is the perfect opening act for the Champs

Advance tickets are priced at £12.50.  Tickets can be obtained from the One Stop store in the town, from Brian on 01652 649230 or from www.wegottickets.com
They will be £14.50 on the door

and so on to 2016 ... we

have some fantastic acts

lined up for the new year.

  First up is:

ROD PICOTT

on Saturday 6th February

Rod Picott is the son of a welder from Berwick Maine, who now lives in East Nashville.  Rod started out as a sheet rock hanger and his songs bear the real life scars of blue collared America, they are inhabited by manual workers, circus hands, boxers and working girls.
Rod has toured the UK every year since 2001 and has built up a substantial following over that time.  Live he is extremely entertaining.  Whilst his songs make the listener think, his between song banter make audience members laugh and smile.  He is the complete entertainer.
Support will come from the hugely popular Hull trio Farewell Fairground who, over the last 3 years have built up a large following on the north bank of the Humber and beyond.
Advance Tickets for this concert will be £11.00, and can be obtained from the usual outlets.
Other acts booked in 2016 include Eric Brace and Peter Cooper, Callaghan, The Mighty Doonans, The Shook Twins, Hannah Aldridge, Lynne Hanson and the Good Intentions, 10 string Symphony and Gilmore & Roberts, with more to be announced.
