Wild Ponies

Performing @
Kirton Town Hall Live

Sunday 23rd November

The WILD PONIES are Doug and Telisha Williams.  Formerly from Martinsville, Virginia they moved to East Nashville a couple of years ago to concentrate on music full time.  The move has paid off with rave reviews in the States and their first headline UK Tour.  Some of the THL regulars will remember them from last year when they supported Rod Picott.
Doug and Telisha’s friendly and cheerful nature belies the serious tone of their material, which covers topics such a sexual abuse and murder, but their acerbic wit always creeps into their songs.
Telisha plays upright bass and sings lead vocals.  She comes over all sweet with a sunshine smile, but with the subject matter of the songs she taunts and teases.

Doug supports her words with harmonies and although his vocals are perfect, it is his guitar that is his weapon.  He fingerpicks beautiful melodies in ballads such as in the song ‘Iris’ and really bends the strings on the upbeat songs.
For more information and videos visit: www.townhalllive.co.uk
Support will come from our very own ‘sound man’ Gerry McNeice who will perform a 35 minute set with The Gerry McNeice Band.
Advance tickets are priced at £10 otherwise £12.00 on the door. Tickets can be obtained from the One Stop store in the town, from Brian on 01652 649230 or from www.wegottickets.com

SWING FEELING Little Big Band

« SWING FEELING » Little Big Band
Organised in 1992, Swing Feeling is today considered by the jazz critics and the jazz amateurs as one of the hottest European bands, with the following musicians...

Jérome Etcheberry or Gilles Berthenet (premier trompette)
Dan Vernhettes (deuxième trompette, leader) - Jean-Pierre Dumontier (trombone)
Hugues Dieuzeide (arrangeur, anches) - Jacques Montebruno (anches)
Philippe Dourneau (anches) - Philippe Milanta (piano)
Enzo Mucci (contrebasse) - François Laudet (drums)

The répertoire proposes a promenade into the music of the big bands of the 30s and 40s, such as Fletcher Henderson, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton, Andy Kirk, Chick Webb, Erskine Hawkins, Fats Waller, Bull Moose Jackson, Lester Young, Harry Edison, Claude Hopkins, Oscar Peterson, Sabby Lewis, Todd Rhodes, Cab Calloway… and some original arrangements by the band.

“With Swing Feeling, we are brought back to the Savoy or any great dancing hall that welcomed by the best big jazz bands. Swing Feeling’s rhythm section has been exemplary during the whole concert, Philippe Milanta often reaching his best (especially in his punctuation's and solos ‘à la Basie’) on the piano. All the soloists are excellent, with a particular mention for Jérôme Etcheberry, who brought the house down on Saint Louis Boogie, Second Balcony Jump, Yacht Club Swing, Krazy Krapers (with an exciting exchange between the trumpet and the drums that reminded me of the famous Benny Goodman’s Sing, Sing, Sing). The final tune, Bellboy Boogie ,had another excitnig dialog, this time between the two trumpeters.” François Abon, Hot Club de France
Swing Feeling is known for its swing, its feel for blues and its collective improvisations.

Maurice Cullaz, the late president of the French Académie du Jazz, wrote: “They are only nine, but they swing like fifteen !” “This band is a first class band. The music breathes, the rhythm is relaxed, and the melodies are really felt. Here one approaches the groove of the old american bands. The musicians really play like one man as they share a common musical spirit, and they all know how to raise the tension by playing solos that are coherent with the esthetic of the group. The size of the band allows a greater flexibility than an average big band has, and offers more liberty to each soloist.”

Guy Chauvier, Jazz classique
“The spirit of Kansas City and Harlem inspires this orchestra. Homogeneity, rhythmic precision and spontaneity unite these musicians of one of the best European bands.”

Jazz Notes
A tender or dynamic music, according to the color of each tune, with arrangements that really swing,
and lots of improvisations. Feeling and Swing!

LARRY GARNER & THE NORMAN BEAKER BAND

LARRY GARNER & THE NORMAN BEAKER BAND
 TOURING UK & EUROPE -   MAY 2015

Larry is a five-time Blues Music Award nominee, for Most Promising Artist, and for Contemporary Male Blues Artist.
Larry was inducted into the Louisiana Blues Hall of Fame in 2002.
  • The BBC honoured Larry as its Bluesman of the Year, and Larry was honoured as Blues Songwriter of the Year three times.
  • Larry was twice named Bluesman of the Year Award by Real Blues Magazine.
"If you haven't discovered the blues brilliance of Larry Garner, then you should jump on this bandwagon. These are blues for today, good to the last note stuff." - Big City Blues American bluesman Larry Garner has found a true musical soul mate in British blues veteran Norman Beaker. Garner may have paid his dues in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, while Beaker cut his gigging teeth in northern England with people such as Alexis Korner , Jack Bruce, Jimmy Rogers, BB King etc ; put them on stage together, and they are definitely drawing from the same musical roots. Garners powerful vocals and expressive musicianship make him a natural front man his songs are delivered with a sense of irony with lyrics that are both meaningful and amusing, added to this Larry has a wonderfully expressive voice, is a fine guitarist and a great performer.

Larry was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana where he picked up on the Swamp Blues music popular in that area, inspired by artistes such as Silas Hogan and Clarence Edwards, he has won just about every award including WC Handy and BB King awards Like Larry, Norman’s songs are also full of social comment and modern day situations, this is a coming together of two modern day Troubadours with something new

NIC JONES DVD released by Topic

NIC JONES DVD released by Topic
Following a truly magical string of Nic and Joe Jones live concerts last month, Nic Jones fans can now enjoy a new Topic DVD containing the superb documentary shown last year on BBC Four.

The Enigma of Nic Jones DVD has the added bonus of seven complete performances of songs exclusive to this release:
The Nic Jones Trio perform three songs in rehearsal, 'Master Kilby', 'Rue The Day' and 'I Only Spoke Portuguese'; Eliza Carthy plays a stunning version of '10,000 Miles'; Blair Dunlop's interpretation of 'Canadee-I-O' clearly shows how Nic's guitar-playing influences younger performers, and Nic's former Bandoggs bandmate Pete Coe plays one of Nic's live staples, 'On a Monday Morning' and a Bandoggs favourite, 'Astley's Ride/Up and Away'.

'...the photography's gorgeous, the talking-head interviews are heartfelt and enlightening, and the comeback footage... is tentative but often deeply moving.' Time Out
