TOWN HALL LIVE - KIRTON   NEXT CONCERT ON FRIDAY 10TH NOVEMBER with THE PAPERBOYS with support from SARAH JANE SCOUTEN The Paperboys from Vancouver last played Town Hall Live in July, 2015.  It was one of our best ever concerts.  Now they are back with their adventurous vision of Canadian roots music, spreading good cheer and great music. The Paperboys formed in 1995 when Tom Landa moved to Vancouver.  They soon became a key part of the ever increasing wave of Canadian folk rock bands that included The Duhks, The Bills and Great Big Sea.  The Paperboys, however, were different with Celtic fiddle, flue, and trombone blazing through their songs.  The songs included Spanish language songs that reflected Tom's heritage and rock songs with strong pop influences.  Their sound is a melting pot, that includes healthy servings of Ska, Soca, folk, soul and funk. Live they are dynamic and the current line up features Tom Landa on multi stringed instruments and vocals, Geoffrey Kelly on flutes and whistles, Tom's wife Kalissa on fiddle and vocals, Brad Gillard on bass, banjo and trombone, ans Sam Esecson on drums.  They are the best multi lingual, multi generational, multi instrumental and genre bendin band you will ever hear. The band also appear under the name of Chorlton Country Club, playing Americana music rather than their trademark blues and soul.  They will play the first set. Live Lauren Housley is simply breath taking.  Their are hints of blues, soul, rock and country in her locker and she has a warm, intense and enjoyable style of her own. Soon after he formed a trio with best friends Andy Sharps (bass) and Conor Downs (drums).  In July last year they released a seven track CD called 'This Family Tree'.  All seven songs are shrewd observations of growing up as teenagers. Luke, from Canterbury, is still only 22 years old and is surely destined for great things.  He is a phenomenal performer, he is not just another bloke with a guitar.  He has been compared to Martin Simpson and Richard Thompson. Luke writes powerful, impressive and personal songs. and a stage presence that many artists would die for.  The command and control he has over his voice is breathtaking and leaves you thinking that you have witnessed a flawless performance.  On top of that his lyrics are hard hitting and downright amusing.  Luke will be accompanied by Andy at this concert. Northern Soul is a phrase coined by writer Dave Godin in 1970, when he noticed football fans from northern England asking for old-fashioned, fast-tempo soul records in his London shop.

Many would have attended the Twisted Wheel in Manchester - a super-cool club for Mods.

But as American black music began to develop in the direction of funk, the clientele clung to the more gritty sounds of the late 1960s.

When the Wheel closed, a series of clubs in the north of England and Midlands had all-nighters. Then Wigan Casino opened and the scene went massive all over the country particularly in Lincolnshire.

Between 1979 and 1981 many Lincolnshire venues, inclusing Lincoln Drill Hall, hosted Northern Soul All-Nighters and was one of the go to destinations those prepared to travel around the UK just to dance.

Now, for the first time in 34 years the original line-up of Drill Hall DJs are back again, playing the original sounds in this legendary venue.

Northern, rare, classics, funk, R’n’B, soul, crossover and modern.
