The life and work of the very wonderful Shirley Collins is celebrated on her 80th birthday on Sunday 5th July in the Queen Elizabeth Hall at the Southbank Centre in London.   Shirley is a towering figure in the music world, her influence stretching far and wide, and some of the brightest stars in the realm of contemporary folk music and beyond will congregate to pay tribute to a woman who is, arguably, the greatest living exponent of the folk tradition. “When I sing, I feel past generations standing behind me… those farm labourers and their wives who kept the songs going for us. The songs are social history and their beauty and power undeniable.” This very special event will be compered by Stewart Lee and, with a band led by John Kirkpatrick, will feature performances by Sam Lee, Olivia Chaney, Lisa Knapp, Alasdair Roberts, Graham Coxon and Trembling Bells. The evening will also see the first-ever live performance of the whole of Shirley’s classic album No Roses. Sat 18th	Unshaven (American Roots Music) One of the hottest bands in the area, this 7 piece band generate energy and excitement everywhere they perform. This dynamic band features everything from fiddle to harmonica with bass and drums in addition to guitars and the unique vocals of John Ingamells.  9pm start.
Sat 25th	The Detuners (Punk Rock Classics) This 4 piece Lincolnshire band play an authentic selection of punk rock classics covering such bands as The Damned, The Jam, The Stooges, The Clash, Sex Pistols, 999, The Stranglers, Ramones, UK Subs, SLF, Dead Kennedys  and many more.  Well worth coming down for as they always give a brilliant performance.  9pm start

Shirley Collins' 80th birthday will be celebrated with a special event. On Sunday 5th July Shirley Collins' 80th birthday will be celebrated by a day-long event - All in the Downs - at the Southbank Centre, London. Free foyer entertainment will be provided by Brighton Morris, the Belles of Londonand Rattle on the Stovepipe. During the afternoon Shirley will be 'in conversation'with Stewart Lee looking back over her life and music, alongside readings from her writings and footage from the Alan Lomax archive. Under the musical directorship of John Kirkpatrick the evening concert will feature an array of the folk scene’s brightest stars performing songs from Shirley’s repertoire and recreating her No Roses album. Guest performers will include – Olivia Chaney, Graham Coxon, Lisa Knapp, Sam Lee, Alasdair Roberts and Trembling Bells. Tom Wright: A Young Musician With A Great Future!

Tom Wright is a young musician, living in Peterborough UK, who has a great future!

From an early age, Tom was brought up on rockabilly and country music from both of his parents, going to see bands as often as he could, along with watching his dad's band.

 At 7 years old, his dad bought him his first guitar, a 3/4 size acoustic, and taught him a few chords. He eventually played it so much, he had worn a hole through the guitar body! He then progressed to get an electric guitar, and started listening to guitarists such as Albert Lee, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Brad Paisley and Keith Urban, trying to emulate their tone, licks and phrasing.

 By 14, he was already travelling up and down the country, playing professionally with shows like the Johnny Cash Story, a tribute to Lonnie Donegan, and an original country band called Midwezt.

 At 17, he joined the Elio Pace band, of which had been BBC Radio 2's house band for the previous 2 years. He is still playing for Elio, and they are currently touring all around the UK performing the music of Billy Joel, in The Billy Joel Songbook.

Tom also fronts his own band and his first solo album is due for release on June 29^th.

Lloyd Cole and the Commotions formed in 1982 when Lloyd was studying English and Philosophy at Glasgow University.   They signed to Polydor in '84 and their debut single 'Perfect Skin' lit up the nation's radios.  The dazzling debut album Rattlesnakes more than fulfilled their promise, littered as it was with hip literary references, cutting wit and sophisticated pop melodies.   Subsequent singles 'Forest 'Fire' and 'Rattlesnakes' and sell-out shows around the country announced in no uncertain terms that a cool, literate new band had arrived.  Second album Easy Pieces followed in Nov '85 and the singles, 'Brand New Friend' and 'Lost Weekend', were both big hits.  The bands third and final album Mainstream in '87 featured another of the band's signature hit songs 'Jennifer She Said'. The Good Lovelies are Caroline Brooks, Kerrie Ough and Sue Passmore.  They will be joined on the tour by ace bassist Marie Josee (MJ) Dandenau, who some of you may remember as being a member of Amanda Rheaume's band when they played here in September 2014. The Good Lovelies are funny and upbeat and play with a pinch of sass.  Live their good humour, camaraderie and self-assurance shines through.  Throughout their set they constantly swap instruments - acoustic and electric guitars, mandolin and banjo.  With MJ playing bass, Kerrie will also play keyboards and Sue will play drums and percussion.  With each girl taking it in turns to sing lead vocals, we know that their three part harmonies complete the package. Support will come from Gary Stewart, a singer songwriter from Leeds, who also plays drums for the band Hope & Social.  He was the bassist for Ellen & The Escapades and also plays in a duo with Rosie Doonan.
