Lloyd Cole - Collected Recordings 1983-1989 boxset featuring B-sides & rarities

Lloyd Cole and the Commotions formed in 1982 when Lloyd was studying English and Philosophy at Glasgow University.

They signed to Polydor in '84 and their debut single 'Perfect Skin' lit up the nation's radios.  The dazzling debut album Rattlesnakes more than fulfilled their promise, littered as it was with hip literary references, cutting wit and sophisticated pop melodies.
Subsequent singles 'Forest 'Fire' and 'Rattlesnakes' and sell-out shows around the country announced in no uncertain terms that a cool, literate new band had arrived.
Second album Easy Pieces followed in Nov '85 and the singles, 'Brand New Friend' and 'Lost Weekend', were both big hits.  The bands third and final album Mainstream in '87 featured another of the band's signature hit songs 'Jennifer She Said'.

A definitive career-spanning box set entitled Collected Recordings 1983-1989 will be released on 29th June '15

The box set takes the listener from the band's earliest demos through the runaway success of their astonishing debut Rattlesnakes, their chart-topping follow-up Easy Pieces, their swansong Mainstream, and, with the inclusion of B-sides, demos and rarities, it provides the definitive guide to one of the most fascinating bands of the 80s.

GOOD LOVELIES

Performing @
Kirton Town Hall Live

Friday 26th June

It is exactly two years since the Good Lovelies toured the UK and played Town Hall Live.  Now they are back for a short six date tour of the country and we are fortunate that they have agreed to play for us again, in what will be a eagerly awaited concert for many.  They have a new album out 'Burn The Plan' which sees them on top form.
The Good Lovelies are Caroline Brooks, Kerrie Ough and Sue Passmore.  They will be joined on the tour by ace bassist Marie Josee (MJ) Dandenau, who some of you may remember as being a member of Amanda Rheaume's band when they played here in September 2014.
The Good Lovelies are funny and upbeat and play with a pinch of sass.  Live their good humour, camaraderie and self-assurance shines through.  Throughout their set they constantly swap instruments - acoustic and electric guitars, mandolin and banjo.  With MJ playing bass, Kerrie will also play keyboards and Sue will play drums and percussion.  With each girl taking it in turns to sing lead vocals, we know that their three part harmonies complete the package.
Support will come from Gary Stewart, a singer songwriter from Leeds, who also plays drums for the band Hope & Social.  He was the bassist for Ellen & The Escapades and also plays in a duo with Rosie Doonan.
Advance tickets are priced at £12 otherwise £13.50 on the door. Tickets can be obtained from the One Stop store in the town, from Brian on 01652 649230 or from www.wegottickets.com

Then next time at Town Hall Live ...

THE PAPERBOYS

Sunday 19th July

For our July concert we welcome Vancouver band The Paperboys to Town Hall Live.
The five piece band play a mixture of styles, which is difficult to describe,   Their music rocks and is danceable, but that is not to say it cannot be mellow, slow and beautiful.  It is roots music, it is pp music, it is good music with doses of Mexican, Irish and African Rhythms.  The Paperboys live shows are high energy and accessible and they have built a reputation of gaining new fans after a single performance.  They sell out venues across the world and are just dynamic and will have you singing along and dancing in the aisles.  Don't miss them.
Advance Tickets for this concert will be £12, and can be obtained from the usual outlets.

Bring Your Friends for a Great Night Out and Save on Tickets!

We would like as many people as possible to come and enjoy the concerts we put on. Why not ask your friends?
Any person buying 6 tickets up to one week before any concert will get £1 off the ticket price on all tickets purchased.
This offer is available only by ringing Brian on 01652 649230 or emailing him on brianchudley@btinternet.com

Court and Spark: An international symposium on Joni Mitchell. Lincoln University UK July 3rd 2015

Court and Spark: An international symposium on Joni Mitchell.
University of Lincoln. Minerva Building 3rd July, 2015.
10am-5pm: Day symposium.
6.30pm-8pm:  Q&A and book signing with Malka Marom, author of Joni Mitchell – Both Sides Now [Omnibus Press, 2014]. Kindly co-hosted by Waterstones, Lincoln.

The School of English and Journalism at the University of Lincoln, U.K invites you to Court and Spark: An International Symposium on Joni Mitchell, which features a Q&A with celebrated author of Joni MitchellBoth Sides Now, Malka Marom.
Joni Mitchell is widely recognised as an innovative, influential, much-loved and much-imitated artist. From her debut album Song to a Seagull to her most recent Shine, Mitchell’s music: her tunings, her lyrics, her scope have drawn critical and popular acclaim. And yet, scholarly attention to her work has been relatively limited. This symposium will attend to Mitchell as a figure worthy of sustained critical thought and appreciation.

The School of English and Journalism at the University of Lincoln invites you to join us on 3rd July, 2015 in considering all things Mitchell. Academics, music critics, fans are all encouraged to attend.
